Just thought I’d share some random thoughts I’ve been having lately about FOX’s upcoming series, Glee, AI, the Lost finale, J.J. Abrams and the fate of Chuck.
As I was watching the American Idol results show with my daughter last night, we saw an extended commercial for FOX’s new fall series, Glee. Is it just me or should this be called High School Musical: The Series? I asked my daughter (who is 8 and therefore an expert on all things HSM) what she thought and she couldn’t agree more. In fact she seemed horrified that a new show was about to rip off her beloved franchise. I mean really, it has the same plot. The only difference is that a glee club stands in for the drama club. There’s the High School Jock (I think he plays football instead of basketball; major creative difference) who upsets the social status at school when he joins the glee club and happens to be an amazing singer. Oh yeah, he also falls for a shy brunette girl that is in the club. Sound familiar? Created by Ryan Murphy, the twisted creator of Nip/Tuck, I’m sure there is more than meets the eye here, but nonetheless, the similarities are ridiculously striking.
So the top 2 contestants have been revealed and my daughter and I couldn’t be more pleased with the result. She was sitting there with her fingers crossed awaiting the fate of her beloved Kris Allen, or Monkey-Man as she likes to call him (What? He does sort of look like a monkey, albeit a cute one like Curious George) and she was so excited that he was in the final 2. I’m happy also. Kris is the real deal and we have been rooting for him in my household for weeks now. I will say that Danny Gokey is an amazing singer, but he is not an artist like Kris or a brilliant performer like Adam. He’s kind of awkward on stage and therefore I think he should focus his career on singing for animated movies. I’m sure it would be pretty lucrative for him. At any rate, the singing competition is more exciting with Kris taking on season front runner Adam and although most people think that Adam has it in the bag, dark horse Kris is going to give him a run for his money.
My favorite series of all time, Lost, ended its fifth season with a bang (literally) last night and it was incredible as usual. The show just continues to get better and better as it races to its final season next year. The finale was amazing, filled with a ton of action and intrigue and leaving us with more questions than answers which is generally the case with this show. I’ll post my theories on what’s up next for the Losties once my head stops spinning… this time travel stuff can really make you dizzy. Speaking of time travel….
Is J.J. Abrams a time traveler? He has to be… the man is obsessed with it. I mean seriously, both of his shows on primetime right now, Lost and Fringe, have plots that hinge on the possibility of time travel and alternate dimensions. Even his reboot of Star Trek deals with traveling through time and alternate timelines. No matter… his obsession translates into my entertainment. May J.J. Abrams live long and prosper!
The last thing on my mind is the fate of NBC’s spy caper, comedy, Chuck. No official word will be given until next week, but I got a sneak peak at what is more than likely going to be NBC’s final fall schedule and it appears that Chuck has made the grade. It looks like Chuck will be on Friday nights at 8PM and this is great news because Friday is generally a less competitive night and therefore the pressure to achieve high ratings is relieved somewhat. Chuck is a great show and I’m very excited at the prospect of a third season. I’m not going to get too excited until an official announcement is made, but I remain very hopeful for the shows future.
