With the Golden Globes set to air this Sunday night the 17th on NBC it’s time for my annual predictions. This entry focuses solely on the movies. Who’s going to win? It’s anybody’s guess, but here are my picks.
Up in the Air
Avatar
Inglorious Basterds
The Hurt Locker
Precious
Who Will Win?
Even though Up in the Air has the most nominations out of any film, the film has been cooling down and will not win the big prize. Quentin Tarantino’s films are always the bridesmaid and never the bride so Inglorious Basterds is out. In the battle of the indie films, The Hurt Locker beats out Precious, but is the Iraq set drama strong enough to take on the Na’vi? I don’t think so. Avatar is going to win. Not only is it a fantastic movie but it is one of the biggest hits in history and The Hollywood Foreign Press will want to award it for that.
BEST COMEDY OR MUSICAL
(500) Days of Summer
The Hangover
It’s Complicated
Julie & Julia
Nine
Who Will Win?
The Hangover is a funny movie and a surprise box office hit, but does it really deserve an award? I don’t think so. Meryl Streep fans may not be able to decide between her two competing films in this category, so Julie & Julia and It’s Complicated will more than likely cancel each other out. This leaves indie favorite (500) Days of Summer and box office dud, Nine. I could be wrong, but I feel like any time there is an actual musical in this category, it wins, giving Nine the edge here.
BEST ACTOR DRAMA
George Clooney
Up in the Air
Jeff Bridges
Crazy Heart
Colin Firth
A Single Man
Morgan Freeman
Invictus
Tobey Maguire
Brothers
Who Will Win?
In my opinion, this is really a two actor race. It comes down to George Clooney’s effortlessly charming performance or Jeff Bridge’s memorable turn as an aging country star. A few weeks ago I would’ve backed Clooney for sure, but the heat of Up in the Air is starting to dwindle and Bridges deserves to finally win an award. He is one of the most underrated actors of all time.
BEST ACTRESS DRAMA
Carey Mulligan
An Education
Emily Blunt
The Young Victoria
Sandra Bullock
The Blind Side
Helen Mirren
The Last Station
Gabourey Sidibe
Precious
Who Will Win?
Each of the actresses nominated gave terrific performances but only one made any impact at the box office. After an amazing year that saw her score the two biggest hits of her career, my gut tells me that the Hollywood Foreign Press is going to want to give Sandra Bullock the recognition she so richly deserves.
BEST ACTOR COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Daniel Day-Lewis
Nine
Matt Damon
The Informant!
Robert Downey Jr.
Sherlock Holmes
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
(500) Days of Summer
Michael Stuhlbarg
A Serious Man
Who Will Win?
Robert Downey Jr. being nominated in this category for Sherlock Holmes is a mystery worthy of the famous detective. Really… how is Sherlock Holmes a comedy? The real race is between Matt Damon’s geeky performance in The Informant! and Daniel Day-Lewis’ surprising turn as a song and dance man in Nine. Again, the Hollywood Foreign Press loves musicals so the award goes to Day-Lewis.
BEST ACTRESS COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Meryl Streep
It’s Complicated
Sandra Bullock
The Proposal
Marion Cotillard
Nine
Julia Roberts
Duplicity
Meryl Streep
Julie & Julia
Who Will Win?
This category is a two way race between Meryl Streep and Meryl Streep. She’s quite good in both films (as per usual) but her turn as Julia Child is fantastic. Besides, voters always love when an actor or actress plays a real person.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Matt Damon
Invictus
Christoph Waltz
Inglorious Basterds
Woody Harrelson
The Messenger
Christopher Plummer
The Last Station
Stanley Tucci
The Lovely Bones
Who Will Win?
Harrelson had a great year starring in Zombieland and playing a conspiracy nut in 2012 and his performance in The Messenger was terrific, but how can you top a man who created a menacing on screen villain who can be terrifying in four different languages. If Christoph Waltz doesn’t win, it would be quite inglorious indeed.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Anna Kendrick
Up in the Air
Vera Farmiga
Up in the Air

Mo’nique
Precious
Penelope Cruz
Nine
Julianne Moore
A Single Man
Who Will Win?
This is another tight race with each of the nominees deserving the award but the edge goes to Mo’nique. She’s been receiving amazing award season buzz and it will be quite astonishing if she doesn’t walk away with the award. If there does happen to be an upset in this category, I see the award going to Cruz who is truly captivating in Nine.
BEST DIRECTOR

Quentin Tarantino

Who Will Win?
It is 1997 all over again as I fully expect Mr. Cameron and his little movie to dominate this awards season. It is time for him to reclaim his title as king of the world.
BEST ANIMATED

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
Coraline

Fantastic Mr. Fox

The Princess and the Frog

Who Will Win?
I happen to think Up is one of the most overrated films of the year, but nonetheless the film has the critical praise and the huge box office needed to effortlessly float away with the award.
