I recently read that director Ridley Scott is set to direct and produce a movie about the classic board game Monopoly. Is he kidding me!? A movie based on Monopoly? How would it even be possible? More importantly, why would the director behind Blade Runner, Gladiator and American Gangster (and a few other classic films) want to direct Monopoly? Clearly it’s all about money, but making a film based on a board game seems like it should fall into the hands of a hack, not one of the most brilliant directors of our time.
Apparently, Universal and Hasbro have teamed up to produce a couple of films based on Hasbro’s board games. They also plan on producing films about Ouija Board and Battleship. Sadly, the way my brain works, I can almost see how these two properties could work. Ouija Board could really just be a fright flick for kids and teens and Battleship could work as an updated version of War Games, the classic Mathew Broderick flick. But Monopoly… I have less than a clue as to how they would pull that off. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will “shape a narrative out of the iconic real estate game,” and Mr. Scott has “an eye toward giving it a futuristic sheen along the lines of his iconic Blade Runner”. Ok… now I’m even more confused. I can just hear the pitch in my head… Okay it’s Monopoly, but it takes place in the future… a future where one evil real estate tycoon has … drum roll please… a monopoly. Sounds thrilling. What’s next, a big screen adaption of Hungry, Hungry Hippos that takes place on Mars? This is a bad idea.

Re: Do not pass go! Do not collect $200!
Maybe it will be one of those completely far-fetched films like Jumanji where people end up inside the game... "Four unsupecting players roll the dice and get caught in a dangerous game of high stakes real estate, facing ARMS, preditory credit practices, and eventual foreclosures that causes the economy to implode. Now they're on a race against time before worldwide catastrophe sets in!"
It would never work. Too far fetched...

I didn't think of that. Making Monopoly in the mode of Jumanji and Zathura. That very well might be what they have in mind. It's still a bad idea though.

Bill, I agree with you 100%. The whole idea is ridiculous. What kind of storyline could it possibly have and why would anyone want to see it. Mr. Scott is truly a talented director and that is why I have to ask, why would he even want to attach his name to this project? Maybe it is all about the money, but I would think he really doesn't need it.

I HOPE MR.SCOTT SAVES THE GET OUT OF JAIL FREE CARD FOR HIMSELF. AFTER WASTING ALL THAT MONEY AND PEOPLE'S TIME ON SUCH A LUDICROUS IDEA, HE SHOULD BE IMPRISONED! DO THEY HAVE A STOP DROPPING ACID CARD?
