The Dark Knight continued to dominate multiplexes this weekend grossing another $75 million bringing its total to $314 million in only 10 days setting yet another record. The previous record was held by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, which took 16 days to reach the $300 million mark. Batman also broke the record for best second weekend gross outdistancing the $72 million taken in by Shrek 2 in it’s second frame. As it stands now, after only 2 weeks, The Dark Knight is the highest grossing film of the year.

Among newcomers, the Will Ferrell comedy, Step Brothers launched with a solid $30 million while The X Files: I Want to Believe crashed and burned with only $10.2 million. Among holdovers, Mamma Mia! continued to do well, grossing $17.9 million, bringing its total up to $62.7 million. My predictions were very close this weekend. Take a look at the chart below.

This weekend two new releases will try and make a splash at the box office, the Will Ferrell comedy, Step Brothers and The X Files: I Want to Believe. The real question however, is how much money The Dark Knight will run away with in its second weekend.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly (who previously starred in Talladega Nights together) team up again to bring us the R rated comedy Step Brothers. This is a good weekend for this film to open as there are no real comedies to compete with. The R rating will hurt though, keeping all of Will Ferrell’s younger fans away. Will’s last R rated comedy, Semi-Pro debuted with about $15 million in February, but Step Brothers should perform better due to its summer release date.  Expect Step Brothers to claim the number two spot this weekend with about $28 million.

Next we have The X Files: I Want to Believe. As a fan of the show, I want to believe that this film will be great and be a big hit, but it won’t be. It has been 10 years since the last film in the series...

The Dark Knightbroke the all-time opening weekend box office record grossing $158.4 million (including Thursday night midnight sales). Led by The Dark Knight, the overall box office climbed to more than $255 million in ticket sales making it the best weekend in movie history. The Dark Knight also broke 2 other records, highest gross for Thursday midnight showings ($18.5 million) and biggest single opening day ($67.9 million).  As I said Thursday, the new Batman flick was a tricky one to predict, and my prediction was too low. This is one time I’m happy to be wrong. I’m a huge fan of this film and it deserves the title. Other new releases, Mamma Mia! And Space Chimps, grossed $27.6 million and $7.3 million respectively, both within striking distance of my predictions of $26 million and $8 million. As far as holdovers go, my predictions were right on target. Take a look at the chart below.

Welcome to my first official box office prediction.  This is an extremely tough weekend to predict.  The Dark Knight is most certainly the hardest film to predict in quite some time.  The last film, Batman Begins was really well received and was a relaunching  of the franchise.
