This weekend at multiplexes audiences are offered 3 new releases; dramedy, Funny People from writer/director Judd Apatow, silly kid comedy, Aliens in the Attic and fright flick, The Collector. There is no question that Funny People will be the #1 film at the box office, but will it’s R rating and serious storyline hurt its potential? Let’s take a look.

BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JULY 24-26
This weekend at the box office, talking guinea pig spies stole the top spot from the wizards of Hogwarts as G-Force had a strong debut at #1 knocking Mr. Potter and friends to second place. Katherine Heigl’s latest romantic comedy, The Ugly Truth, opened very well in third, while most people chose not to adopt new horror film, Orphan, which opened mildly in fourth place.

This weekend audiences are offered 3 new films at multiplexes; 3-D Disney flick, G-Force, romantic comedy, The Ugly Truth and creepy horror thriller, Orphan. The new horror thriller, Orphan can be summed up in one word… ridiculous. In all fairness to the film, I have to be honest and say that the horror genre is my least favorite, especially those featuring murderous children. I did go to the theatre with an open mind, but Orphan is an over long, tedious film with a twist that I saw coming from a mile away. That’s not to say everyone will see the twist coming, but a large portion of the audience will. The only saving grace of the film comes in the form of terrific acting by all the leads.

After breaking the record for midnight showings on Tuesday and a fabulous opening day Wednesday, the boy wizard fell back down to Earth for the rest of the weekend and performed like the last film of the series, The Order of the Phoenix. Let’s take a look.

It’ll come as no surprise to the legion of Harry Potter fans that the sixth entry in the popular franchise, The Half-Blood Prince, is a wonderful film. After watching all 6 films of the series over the last 6 days, I believe it is time to declare that Harry Potter is the best film franchise in cinematic history. Believe me I don’t make the above statement lightly, I’m a huge fan of the original Star Wars trilogy, but SW has had its share of bad moments over the course of its life, whereas 8 years and 6 films later, the Harry Potter films have never had one creative misstep. Every time I watch any of the Potter movies, I think to myself this is the best one in the series only to disagree as soon as I watch another one. They are all fabulous movies based on source material that is out of this world and there is no reason to believe that the final films won’t be just as fantastic.
