BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER 20-22
Twilighters were out in force this weekend propelling the latest installment in the series, New Moon to the third largest opening weekend of all time. The vampire romance broke a few records this weekend as well. Sandra Bullock scored a touchdown with her football drama, The Blind Side, achieving her best opening weekend to date. The last new film of the weekend, animated adventure, Planet 51, opened to little fanfare in fourth place.

7 out of 10
I have to admit after watching the first Twilight I didn’t really understand what all of the buzz was about. I chalked this up to the fact that I’m not a teenager and I also don’t have a vagina (although sometimes I wish I did). Don’t get me wrong, by no means did I think Twilight was bad; it was merely okay. I’ve seen better, I’ve seen worse. New Moon is a marked improvement upon the first film and I actually found myself getting wrapped up in this modern day retelling of Romeo and Juliet with a supernatural twist. New Moon still isn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen, but if I were a fourteen year old girl, I’m sure it would be.

This weekend at the box office is a big one as The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the second film in the series, may have the biggest opening weekend of the year. Sandra Bullock stars in her third movie this year, The Blind Side, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson lends his voice to animated adventure, Planet 51. These films will have to contend with 2012, which had a terrific opening last weekend and also Disney’s A Christmas Carol, which should continue to have a good hold at the box office. How much blood will Twilight be able to suck out of moviegoers? Let’s take a look.

4 out of 10
What can I say about 2012? The special effects are amazing… everything else, not so much. The script is horrible, most of the acting is cheesy and the film is waaaaay too long at two hours and forty minutes. There are so many things to snicker at in this movie, it’s difficult to know where to begin. The only reason the movie merits even a 4 out of 10 is because there is about a half hour of pure movie thrills that will leave you gasping for air. So roughly one-fifth of the movie is good. The rest is fairly awful.

It’s the end of the world as we know it as disaster movie 2012 from director Rolland Emmerich storms into theatres. 2012 will pretty much have the field to itself as it is the only wide release of the weekend. Opening in 900 theatres, Pirate Radio, formerly known as The Boat That Rocked, is hoping to for smooth sailing at the box office and Precious expands to over 170 theatres after an explosive debut on only 18 screens last weekend and may find its way into the top 5. Let’s take a look.
