BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER 20-22
Twilighters were out in force this weekend propelling the latest installment in the series, New Moon to the third largest opening weekend of all time. The vampire romance broke a few records this weekend as well. Sandra Bullock scored a touchdown with her football drama, The Blind Side, achieving her best opening weekend to date. The last new film of the weekend, animated adventure, Planet 51, opened to little fanfare in fourth place.

This weekend at the box office is a big one as The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the second film in the series, may have the biggest opening weekend of the year. Sandra Bullock stars in her third movie this year, The Blind Side, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson lends his voice to animated adventure, Planet 51. These films will have to contend with 2012, which had a terrific opening last weekend and also Disney’s A Christmas Carol, which should continue to have a good hold at the box office. How much blood will Twilight be able to suck out of moviegoers? Let’s take a look.

BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER 13-15
This weekend at the box office, 2012 destroyed every movie in its path and easily took first place, while Pirate Radio capsized in eleventh. Jim Carrey’s A Christmas Carol held up really well in its second frame whereas fellow sophomores The Men Who Stare at Goats, The Fourth Kind and The Box all suffered steep declines. Take a look.

It’s the end of the world as we know it as disaster movie 2012 from director Rolland Emmerich storms into theatres. 2012 will pretty much have the field to itself as it is the only wide release of the weekend. Opening in 900 theatres, Pirate Radio, formerly known as The Boat That Rocked, is hoping to for smooth sailing at the box office and Precious expands to over 170 theatres after an explosive debut on only 18 screens last weekend and may find its way into the top 5. Let’s take a look.

BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER 6-8
Ho, ho, ho. Disney received its first present of the holiday season as their new version of Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol opened at #1, grossing more than double that of the second place film for the weekend. The Men Who Stare at Goats and The Fourth Kind opened in 3rd and 4th place respectively to decent numbers, while Richard Kelly’s The Box crashed and burned with a 6th place debut. Let’s take a look.

The box office kicks into high gear this weekend with four new releases hitting theatres after a relatively boring Halloween frame that saw just one new film open. Kicking off Christmastime in Hollywood, Disney’s 3-D reimagining of Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol is the widest release opening in more than 3500 screens (including IMAX) nationwide. Also opening, alien abduction, docuthriller, The Fourth Kind, which is supposedly based on true case studies, The Box from the offbeat director of Donnie Darko, Richard Kelly, and George Clooney stars in the first of three films he has coming out in the next month, The Men Who Stare at Goats. Will the King of Pop still be able to compete in such a crowded field of releases? Let’s take a look.

BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 30 – NOVEMBER 1
Halloween scared some audiences away from theatres this weekend resulting in a lackluster performance from many of the films in the top 10. Michael Jackson’s much anticipated rehearsal documentary, This Is It, wasn’t quite the thriller that it was hyped to be falling way short of the ridiculous box office predictions that have come out over the last few weeks. Paranormal Activity benefitted from the frightful holiday, slipping just a tiny bit in its sixth weekend. Not even the desire for scares during Halloween could save Saw VI. The film plummeted in its second weekend and its total after 10 days doesn’t come close to the opening weekend take of the previous installment(s).

This Is It opened on Wednesday with a disappointing $7.4M including $2.2M from Tuesday midnight showings. This is way lower than expected. Certainly way lower than the $17M Sony was hoping for and also way lower than the original Wednesday estimates announced this morning ($12M). The film did gross another $13M worldwide so more than likely Sony will be making money from the film, just not as much as they had hoped for.

Its Halloween weekend and horror movies Paranormal Activity and Saw VI aren’t the talk of the town. Instead all the box office frenzy is focused on Michael Jackson’s This Is It. How much money will it make? Can it possibly come close to AEG’s 5 day prediction (it opened on Wednesday) of $250M? Not very likely after early estimates for Wednesday’s gross have come in at about $12M. One way or another, Jackson will take the #1 spot for the weekend, but it is not shaping up to be the runaway blockbuster that all the hype surrounding the pic suggested. Let’s take a look.
