Bill's box office predictions and more.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JUNE 1-3
There is only one new film opening in wide release this weekend: Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsmen is the third imagining of the fairest one of all in the past year, behind ABC’s Once Upon a Time and recent underperformer Mirror, Mirror from Relativity Media. The film stars Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsmen and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen. Hemsworth is largely untested outside of the Marvel universe and Theron doesn’t pack that much of a punch at the box office leaving the success of the film resting on Stewart’s shoulders. Will her Twilight fans follow her to this new role or will they reject it as they did every other Stewart vehicle outside of the vampire flicks? Based on my estimates, the Top 10 will generate about $121.6 million over the weekend, down about 20.2% from last year when X-Men: First Class from 20th Century Fox and The Hangover Part II from Warner Bros. led the overall Top 10 to a total of $152.3 million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 25-28
There are two new films opening in wide release over the long holiday weekend: Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones team-up to save the world for a third time in Sony’s Men in Black 3 and Warner Bros. releases another found footage horror film starring a mostly unknown cast, Chernobyl Diaries from producer Oren Peli, the creator of the Paranormal Activity series. Memorial Day weekend is generally one of the biggest box office frames of the year as people use their leisure time to go to the movies. While this year will still be big, it is going to be a bloodbath in comparison to last year due to the poor performance of the new releases (besides The Avengers) over the last several weekends. Based on my estimates, the Top 10 will generate about $179.8 million over the four day weekend, down about 32.1% from last year when The Hangover Part II from Warner Bros. and Paramount’s Kung Fu Panda 2 led the overall Top 10 to a total of $264.7 million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 18-20
There are three new films opening in wide release this weekend: Universal teams with Hasbro for PG-13 action flick Battleship based on the popular board game, a huge ensemble cast including Elizabeth Banks, Chris Rock, Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz and Dennis Quaid star in the adaption of best-selling self-help book What to Expect When You are Expecting from Lionsgate and Sasha Baron Cohen gets a jump start on the weekend with the Wednesday release of his latest comedy offering The Dictator from Paramount. Although The Dictator opens on Wednesday, the prediction above is for Friday to Sunday only. Based on my estimates, the Top 10 will generate about $170.3 million over the weekend, up about 7.8% from last year when Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Universal’s Bridesmaids led the overall Top 10 to a total of $157.1 million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 11-13
There is only one new film opening in wide release this weekend: Once again director Tim Burton has teamed up with his eternal muse Johnny Depp for another movie. Dark Shadows is an adaption of the cult classic vampire laced soap opera from the 60’s of the same name. Burton’s version seems to be more of a comedic take on the characters which may turn-off fans of the original series (whoever they may be?). Audiences have come to trust the Burton/Depp brand which all but guarantees a solid opening, but the films legs will largely depend on word of mouth. The film also has the misfortune of being the first new movie to be released in the wake of box office juggernaut The Avengers and may find itself lost in the superhero flicks shadow. Based on my estimates, the Top 10 will generate about $156.3 million over the weekend, up about 18.9% from last year when Paramount’s Thor and Universal’s Bridesmaids led the overall Top 10 to a total of $126.8 million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 4-6
There is only one new film opening in wide release this weekend: Once again, Marvel Studios will kick off the summer movie season with the hugely anticipated superhero flick The Avengers from fanboy favorite writer/director Joss Whedon. The film is not a sequel but should play like the ultimate sequel at the box office as it brings together the Marvel superheroes Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk together after headlining their own successful movies. The reviews for the film have been off the chart good with some critics hailing it as the best superhero film of all time. One thing is for sure, The Avengers is likely going to have one of the biggest opening weekends ever, kicking off what may very well be the highest grossing summer movie season of all time. Based on my estimates, the Top 10 will generate about $211.3 million over the weekend, up about 27.8% from last year when Paramount’s Thor and Universal’s Fast Five, led the overall Top 10 to a total of $152.5 million.
