I had two questions going into this past box office weekend.  The first was whether the Jonas Brothers had as many fans as Miley Cyrus. The second was whether the classic video game Street Fighter still had that many fans after all these years. Both were answered… let’s take a look at the results.
It turns out that I was right that Miley Cyrus has a bigger fan base than the Jonas Brothers, but I didn’t realize how right I actually was. Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience opened to $12.7M, a far cry from the $31.1M that Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds 3-D bowed to last year. I had a feeling that Jonas would open to a smaller amount than Hannah Montana, but my $18M forecast was still way off and I thought without a doubt that it would be #1 this weekend. The Jonas Brothers will get a shot at redemption next weekend, but I would think that most of the fan base probably caught the show this weekend, so the drop off could be fairly large.
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li managed to debut in eighth place despite a small theatre count and lack of buzz with $4.7M. I had a feeling that there couldn’t be that big of an audience for this movie and I was right on the money with my $4M prediction. The roads ahead for Street Fighter look pretty bleak, but it may have a chance to gain a cult following from DVD and cable exposure.
Among holdovers, Madea Goes to Jail managed to hold on to the top spot, despite a 60% drop from last week. Madea grossed another $16.5M and is already Tyler Perry’s biggest box office hit with $64.8M in the bank. After sweeping the Oscars and adding theatres, Slumdog Millionaire was in third place, its highest chart position so far. The film surged an impressive 45% in its 16th weekend, adding another $12.2M, to bring its already towering gross to $115M. Liam Neeson’s action flick, Taken, continued to show tremendous strength in its 5th week of release, dipping a slight 12% and grossing another $10M. Taken has now reached a gross of $107M and may find its way to $150M. To see how all my predictions fared, check out the chart below.
