This weekend audiences proved they love a good cat fight as stalker suspense movie, Obsessed, starring Beyonce and Ali Larter opened at #1. Fighting starring Channing Tatum fought its way to a #3 bow, The Soloist starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx opened mildly in fourth and Disney documentary, Earth, enjoyed a strong opening in fifth place.
Much to my dismay, Obsessed opened strongly at #1 with $28.5M. This was way above my $19M prediction and for that matter way above most industry expectations for the movie. I really dislike movies of this nature but I am clearly in the minority as audiences rushed out to see Beyonce face off with Ali Larter. Obsessed marks Beyonce’s biggest debut at the box office in a lead role.   The movie was widely panned by critics and should fall dramatically next weekend, possibly more than 60%.
Fighting starring Channing Tatum had a solid debut in 3rd place grossing $11.4M right in line with my $11M forecast. Reviews for the fight flick weren’t very good, but its target audience of young men looking for some action didn’t seem to mind. Channing Tatum has been conspicuously absent from multiplexes since his lead role in surprise hit, Step it Up, in 2006. Fighting certainly helps Tatum’s exposure to young men, the same audience that will either make or break his next film, August’s G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
After being delayed from last December, The Soloist starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx opened on a dull note in 4th place, collecting $9.7M, right in line with my $10M prediction. A feel good film, based on a true story, starring 2 Oscar nominees should have been more powerful at the box office, but reviews were mixed at best. The delayed opening also didn’t help at the box office as most moviegoers are savvy enough to know that in most cases when a movie is delayed, it is generally not that good. The Soloist may play to the tune of about $30M by the end of its run.
Disney launched its first documentary, Earth, to fabulous results, pulling in $8.5M (exactly as I predicted) over the weekend and $14.2M since its opening on Earth Day Wednesday. These are some really powerful numbers for a documentary and they bode well for the future of Disney Nature’s upcoming slate of documentaries. Earth should display some good legs in the weeks ahead with little competition from other family films until late May when the second Night at the Museum opens and Pixar’s Up floats in to theatres.
Among holdovers, despite good reviews and a stellar cast, political thriller, State of Play, dropped 51% to bring in a mere $6.9M in its second weekend. This was a way larger drop than I expected. 17 Again starring former Disney prince, Zac Efron also fell 51% to gross an additional $11.7M, right in line with my $12.3M forecast. To see how the rest of my predictions fared, check out the chart below.
