The battle for the 4 day holiday box office crown wasn’t as tight as some experts expected with Ben Stiller’s Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian easily terminating Terminator Salvation by a distance of about $16M. Star Trek and Angels & Demons fought it out for third place while new comedy spoof, Dance Flick, boogied its way to fifth place.
Battle of the Smithsonian easily won the weekend, grossing $70M over the 4 day frame, exactly as I predicted. Museum opened to $15.3M on Friday and then enjoyed a big bump of 29% to collect $19.7M on Saturday due to all of the family traffic. Sales eased up a bit on Sunday to $18.4M to bring the 3 day total to $53.5M. Museum enjoyed a great hold on Memorial Day Monday collecting another $16.5M for a great overall total and a solid #1 debut. This was a big win for Museum as many box office tracking services predicted it opening in 2nd place and losing the box office crown to Terminator. The first Night was a surprise hit in the winter of 2006 and it seems that audience goodwill has spilled over to this latest installment in the popular series. Smithsonian does have another battle in front of it next weekend as Disney Pixar’s Up lifts off. Nonetheless, I believe there is room in the marketplace for both and Night should drop about 50% off its 3 day total bringing in another $27M or so.
Terminator Salvation opened on Thursday to get a jump on the long holiday weekend and opened to a decent $13.4M leading to a disappointing $53.8M after 5 days. Salvation inched up a bit on Friday bringing in $14.9M but declined each day since to bring in $53.8M over the 4 day weekend, very close to my $55M call. Salvation hasn’t thrilled critics in the least and based on the slow decline from day to day over this weekend, the road ahead seems pretty rough for the film. Terminator could experience a Wolverine like drop next weekend, possibly shaving 65% off its 3 day weekend total of $43M.
Comedy spoof, Dance Flick, brought to you by the next generation of Wayans’ performed decently and shook its hips to the tune of $13.1M over the 4 day span, very close to my $14M forecast. I would expect Dance to display wobbly legs in the weeks ahead and it will probably waltz its way to about $30M once the music stops.
Among holdovers, Star Trek and Angels & Demons battled it out for third place with the Enterprise ultimately beaming up more cash. Trek brought in $29.4M bringing its total to an astounding $191M after 3 weeks at multiplexes. Trek’s 4 day total was right in line with my $30.1M prediction. Demons landed in 4th place with $27.7M, close to my $26M forecast. To see how the rest of my predictions fared, check out the chart below.
