This weekend offers moviegoers six new films to choose from. First up is the Ben Stiller comedy/action film Tropic Thunder. Tropic Thunder looks hysterical and the reviews have been mostly positive. However, I don't know if audiences really want to see Jack Black and Ben Stiller running around a jungle with machine guns.  I think Tropic could gross $23M this weekend for a 5 day take (it opens on Wednesday) of $34M. Next we have Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the first ever animated Star Wars film. Reviews haven’t been too kind but I don’t think that should make much of a difference to the fan base. Poor reviews certainly didn’t hurt Episode I or II at the box office. I think that most people are underestimating how this movie will perform and I don’t understand why. Every father who is a Star Wars fan (there are many of us) will be taking their kids to see this. I know I am.  I think The Clone Wars will be at the top of the box office this weekend, grossing $24M. Mirrors, the R rated horror film, starring Kiefer Sutherland also opens this weekend. Arriving in under 3000 theatres, Mirrors should gross about $11M.

Three other films open this weekend, each in less than 1000 theatres. The new Woody Allen film, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, starring Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz, opens in less than 700 theatres and should gross about $4M. The new 3-D animated kids flick, Fly Me to the Moon, opens in about 500 locations and should gross about $2M. Last and probably least, the new Luke Wilson drama, Henry Poole is Here, opens in about 500 theatres. There isn’t much buzz about this film and the reviews have been mixed. I would expect Henry Poole to make less than $1M this weekend. For the rest of my predictions, see the chart below:
