Pixar’s house on floating balloons continued to soar high in its second voyage as Up took the #1 spot again at the box office this weekend. Raunchy, R rated laugh fest, The Hangover, performed way better than most industry expectations and easily took second place and nearly the top spot. Will Ferrell’s reimagining of Land of the Lost didn’t do so well and debuted in a distant third place.
Strong reviews and fabulous word of mouth allowed Disney Pixar’s Up to fly to the top of the charts again with $44.2M, exactly as I predicted. Down just 35%, Up experienced the smallest decline for a Pixar flick in its second weekend since 2004’s The Incredibles (29%) and 2003’s Finding Nemo (34%). With this weekend’s Land of the Lost bombing, Up really has no major competition until Ice Age: Rise of the Dinosaurs arrives in July and should continue to float away with box office gold until then. Look for Up to lift its total to about $270M by the end of its voyage to become the second biggest hit in Pixar’s history behind only Finding Nemo ($339.7M).
The Hangover proved to be one bachelor party that everyone wanted to go to, opening to an incredible $43.3M, very close to my $41M projection. Powered by terrific reviews, great buzz, a likable cast and a hilarious trailer, The Hangover is the third biggest opening in box office history for an R rated comedy behind only 2008’s Sex and the City($56.8M) and 2001’s American Pie 2 ($45.1M). Both of those films had a built in audience which makes The Hangover’s performance even more impressive. With college students off for the summer, I would expect this hangover to last a long time. With word of mouth continuing to spread, expect The Hangover to make it to about $120M by the end of its run.
Opening in a distant third place, Will Ferrell’s Land of the Lost managed only a $19.5M debut, right in line with my $20M forecast. Due to terrible reviews and a PG-13 rating for some strong language and sexual situations, Lost’s target family audience avoided it and opted to fly away with Up and visit Ben Stiller’s Museum instead. Aside from those things, remaking Land of the Lost for the big screen was to put it plainly, a bad idea. There aren’t that many fans of the property out there and certainly not enough who actually care. Look for Land of the Lost to go extinct quickly and make about $45M by the end of its run. To see how the rest of my predictions fared, check out the chart below.
