This weekend Sandra Bullock stole the box office crown with her latest romantic comedy, The Proposal, scoring the best weekend opening of her career in the process. Jack Black and Michael Cera journeyed to the stoner age in Year One and managed a 4th place debut in a highly competitive field that included holdover hits, The Hangover and Up, which placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Sandra Bullock’s return to romantic comedy, The Proposal opened at #1 this weekend, grossing a way higher than expected $33.6M. The debut was much bigger than industry expectations for the movie and way higher than my $26M forecast, which I actually thought was too high. The Proposal set a new record for Bullock, destroying her previous best opening weekend of $17.6M for 2007’s Premonition. This also marks the first time Bullock has landed in the top spot since 1999’s Forces of Nature, co-starring Ben Affleck. With no competition from any other romantic comedies ahead in the next few weeks, The Proposal should have a long walk down the aisle and reach $100M+ by the end of its run.
This weekend’s other new comedy release, Year One, starring Jack Black and Michael Cera as cavemen, opened in 4th place with a respectable $19.6M bow right in line with my $20M prediction. Reviews haven’t been great and more than likely its target audience of young males have already shown up, so the weeks ahead will be tough on Year One. I would expect a big drop next weekend as its target audience is drawn to Transformers 2 and for Year One to wander its way to $50M by the end of its journey.
Among holdovers, The Hangover gave up the #1 spot after 2 weekends on top, but continued to rake it in. The bachelor party gone wrong comedy slipped a miniscule 18% to gross another $26.7M, close to my $24.6M call, bringing its total to a staggering $152.8M after only 3 weeks in theatres. At its current pace The Hangover is on track to gross at least $225M. The Taking of Pelham 123 dropped a reasonable 49% in its 2nd weekend, stealing another $12M in box office gold, right on with my $12.4M projection. Eddie Murphy’s latest box office failure, Imagine That, had a way smaller decline in its 2nd frame than his previous bombs (Meet Dave -68% and The Adventures of Pluto Nash -71%), easing down a sound 40% to conjure up another $3.3M at the box office. Imagine That fared way better than I thought; I expected a 52% drop. To see how the rest of my predictions fared, check out the chart below.
