BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JUNE 26-28
The Autobots and Decepticons ruled the multiplexes this weekend as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen had a stunning 5 day debut. The Cameron Diaz tearjerker, My Sister’s Keeper, had a decent debut in 5th place, while holdovers The Proposal, The Hangover and Up continued to soar. Let’s take a look.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen had an amazing debut, grossing $109M over the Friday to Sunday span for an eye-popping total of $200.1M since its opening on Wednesday. Most industry expectations had the film’s opening pegged at about $175M-$180M over the 5 day session but Transformers exceeded those expectations by quite a bit. It even opened above my aggressive prediction of a $100M weekend with a 5 day total of $188M. Revenge of the Fallen also broke quite a few box office records this weekend, two of which formerly belonged to Harry Potter.
BEST WEDNESDAY OPENING
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix – 2007 - $44.2M
Revenge of the Fallen - $60.6M
BEST 5 DAY TOTAL FOR A FILM OPENING ON A WEDNESDAY
Spider-Man 2 – 2004 - $152.4M

BIGGEST OPENING WEEKEND IN JUNE
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – 2004 - $93.7M
Revenge of the Fallen - $112M
Optimus Prime and company also challenged quite a few records along the way and nearly toppled The Dark Knight.
BIGGEST OPENING DAY
The Dark Knight – 2008 - $67.2M
Revenge of the Fallen - $60.6M
BIGGEST 5 DAY TOTAL
The Dark Knight – 2008 - $203.8M
Revenge of the Fallen - $200.1M
As you can see, the shape shifting robots almost stole a few records from Batman and I believe Fallen would’ve beat The Dark Knight’s opening weekend take of $158.4M had it opened on a Friday instead of a Monday. Guess we’ll never know. Audiences roundly ignored all the bad reviews from critics and raced to theatres to see the sequel to 2007’s smash hit, Transformers, but the reviews will keep Fallen from reaching the amazing heights of The Dark Knight, which grossed a total of $533.3M to become the second biggest money maker of all time behind 1997’s Titanic ($600.8M). Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen should make its way to about $400M-$425M by the end of its run.
The only other film brave enough to open up against the onslaught of the behemoth robots was Cameron Diaz’s My Sister’s Keeper, a sad story about a little girl dying from leukemia. Keeper opened at #5 to a decent $12M, a notch higher than my $10M prediction. Look for My Sister’s Keeper to make just under $30M by the time the tissues run out.
Among holdovers, Sandra Bullock’s return to romantic comedy in The Proposal continued to perform well, bringing in another $18.5M exactly as I predicted. The second weekend take for The Proposal was still larger than her former biggest opening weekend record of $17.6M for 2007’s Premonition and now stands the chance of becoming the biggest hit of her career. Last weekend’s new comedy, Year One was savaged by Transformers as the robots stole its entire target audience of young men. Year One dropped a ridiculously bad 70% to gross a meager $5.8M in its second outing. With the arrival of Fallen, I anticipated a huge drop, but Year One performed even worse than my forecasted 65% drop. To see how the rest of my predictions fared, check out the chart below.
