BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF AUGUST 14-16
5 new movies jammed their way into multiplexes this weekend in an effort to capitalize on the last few weeks of the summer movie going season to decidedly split results. Sci-fi thriller District 9 invaded the #1 spot with an explosive first 3 days and The Time Traveler’s Wife starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana had a solid debut in third place. Japanese animated film, Ponyo, opened to middling results, while The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard starring Jeremy Piven and Bandslam starring Vanessa Hudgens failed to connect with audiences. District 9, produced by Peter Jackson and directed by first time filmmaker Neill Blomkamp, got off to an amazing start collecting an impressive $37M in its first frame soaring above most industry expectations, including my $30M prediction. The film has been the center of terrific buzz ever since premiering at Comic-Con a few weeks ago. The reviews for District 9 have been really great and mixed with a clever marketing campaign the faux documentary alien invasion pic was really able to attract an audience. The reported budget for the film was $30M so I would expect to see District 10 landing in theatres in a few short years. D9 will probably make it to the $100M mark by the end of its invasion. The film could soar higher, but I don’t think this is a film for everyone. Read my review here.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, The Time Traveler’s Wife had no trouble finding an audience this weekend despite poor reviews from critics. The romantic drama opened in 3rd place with $19.2M, very close to my $18M forecast. The audience for this film was a bit front loaded due to the popularity of the novel and the poor reviews will probably catch up with it in the weekends ahead. Look for The Time Traveler’s Wife to make about $55M total and jump 4 months in to the future to find success on DVD.
Poor Jeremy Piven. After promoting The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard all over the place over the last couple of weeks, audiences chose to skip it, opting to stay home and watch him on HBO’s Entourage instead. The film opened in 6th place with the paltry sum of $5.4M, in line with my $6M projection. Piven has had a difficult time translating his television success to the big screen. Here’s a look at how his films since Entourage debuted in 2004 have performed at the box office.

Piven also had a voice cameo in Pixar’s Cars, but I didn’t think it was fair to include that in his box office chart. I’m bag fan of Jeremy Piven and I hope that he becomes the box office star he deserves to be. Look for The Goods to barely make it to $15M and possibly become a cult classic on DVD and cable.
Acclaimed animation director, Hayau Miyazaki’s Ponyo opened in 9th place to middling results. Opening in only 927 sites, Ponyo grossed $3.5M right on target with my $3M prediction. The reviews have been terrific but after a summer filled with 3-D guinea pigs, a floating house and a prehistoric squirrel, not to mention Autobots, boy wizards and Captain Kirk, kids just weren’t that excited about this traditional animated film. Ponyo may make about $12M by the end of its run.
High School Musical fans didn’t follow Vanessa Hudgens to her latest film, Bandslam, which opened below the top 10 to a less than slammin’ $2.3M. This was way lower than most industry expectations but right on with my $2.5M forecast. Studio Summit tried to boost the films performance by premiering a new trailer for Twilight: New Moon in front of it but the move clearly didn’t pay off. Bandslam will be lucky to make $7M by the end of its song.
Among holdovers, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (read my review) held up reasonably well with a 59% drop. Joe took in another $22.5M in line with my $23M target to bring its total to $98.8M after 10 days. Look the Real American Heroes to rise to about $150M-$160M by battles end. Despite competition for its target audience from The Time Traveler’s Wife, Julie & Julia dropped a moderate 38% to cook up another $12.4M at the box office, almost exactly as I said.
