The summer season ended with a whimper with a weak Labor Day weekend frame. The Dark Knight passed the $500M mark this weekend and Tropic Thunder continued its march to the six figure mark, earning $14.3M and bringing its overall gross to $86.6M. All five of the films opening in wide release over the four day holiday frame stumbled out of the gate and had no real box office impact at all. To see how the top 10 played out, see the chart below. Two of the movies that opened in wide release this weekend failed to make the top 10. College opened with $2.6M, lower than my $3.5M forecast and Hamlet 2 expanded to 1600 theatres to little fanfare grossing $2.1M, well below my $4M prediction.
