Is it Labor Day already? The summer flew by as we enter the last box office frame of the season. 3 new films will try to capitalize on the last weekend of summer; action flick, Gamer, starring Gerard Butler, another rom-com starring Sandra Bullock, All About Steve and Extract from director Mike Judge and starring Jason Bateman. Can any of these films take the top spot from The Final Destination? Let’s take a look.
Gamer starring Gerard Butler is set in a future where humans can control other humans in mass scale, multi-player online gaming environments. A star player from a game called “Slayers” looks to regain his independence while taking down the games mastermind. The movie looks pretty cool, almost like a modern update of the Schwarzenegger classic The Running Man. Look for Gamer to play its way to  about $13.5M over the four day span.
Sandra Bullock stars in another romantic comedy following the runaway success of this summer’s The Proposal, called All About Steve. The film also stars Bradley Cooper hot off of The Hangover. Bullock plays a woman who is convinced that a CNN cameraman (Cooper) is her true love, and trails him as he travels all over the country, hoping to convince him that they belong together. Don’t expect this movie to come close to the success of either The Proposal or The HangoverAll About Steve should collect about $14M over the 4 day weekend.
Mike Judge returns with another workplace comedy, Extract, starring Jason Bateman and Ben Affleck. Bateman plays Joel, the owner of an extract plant, who tries to contend with a myriad of personal and professional problems such as his potentially unfaithful wife and employees who want to take advantage of him. This is Bateman’s first lead role, something he’s been deserving of after playing second banana in films such as Hancock. Opening in about 1600 theatres, Extract should take in about $5.5M over the long holiday frame.
Among holdovers, last weekend’s champ, The Final Destination should lose about 43% of its audience to scare another $15.6M out of movie goers, just enough to retain the top spot. This will bring its total to about $50M after 10 days. Last weekend’s other horror entry, Halloween 2, will not fare as well. Look for the Rob Zombie sequel to drop about 58% and slash its way to another $6.9M. To see the rest of my predictions for the last weekend of the season, check out the chart below.
Be sure and come back Monday for the results.
