BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 4-7
With Labor Day weekend behind us, the summer box office season is officially over. 3 new movies closed out the season; another romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock, All About Steve, action flick Gamer starring Gerard Butler and workplace comedy, Extract starring Jason Bateman. None of them were powerful enough to grab the top spot from The Final Destination which remained box office champ for the second weekend in a row.
Despite awful reviews, All About Steve, starring Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper managed a third place opening collecting $13.9M, right on target with my $14M prediction. Steve performed decently due to audience goodwill from Bullock’s surprise summer hit, The Proposal and Cooper’s runaway comedy smash, The Hangover. It also helped that Steve was the first new release in weeks aimed at women after weeks of testosterone laced films such as The Final Destination, Inglorious Basterds and District 9. Look for All About Steve to plummet next weekend and take its rightful place as a box office bomb.
Gamer starring Gerard Butler opened in fourth place with an estimated $11.2M, a couple of notches lower than my $13.5M projection. Competition for its target audience of young men was fierce due to the continuing success of Basterds, District 9 and The Final Destination and poor reviews didn’t help its cause either. Gamer should make it to about $30M before the plug is pulled.
The final new release was Extract from writer/director Mike Judge. Extract managed a 10th place opening with only $5.3M, very close to my $5.5M forecast. The reviews were mixed for the workplace comedy and this is the third time Judge has struck out at the box office behind 1999’s underrated Office Space and 2006’s Idiocracy. Office Space did go on to become a cult classic and I believe Extract may have that same chance.
Among holdovers, The Final Destination stayed at the top of the charts, dropping a reasonable 44% over the 4 day frame to scare up another $15.4M bringing its total to $50.7M after 11 days. This was right in line with my $15.6M prediction. Last weekend’s other new horror entry, Halloween 2, didn’t fare as well, plummeting 57% to collect another $7.1M, on target with my $6.9M projection. To see how the rest of the top 10 shaped up and how my other predictions fared, check out the chart below.
Be sure to come back Thursday as I predict the openings of animated adventure, 9, horror film, Sorority Row, snow thriller, Whiteout and Tyler Perry’s latest, I Can Do Bad All By Myself.
