It’s kind of a boring weekend at the box office with only 1 new movie hitting multiplexes everywhere. The comedy Couples Retreat, starring Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau and Jason Bateman should be able to notch up a decent debut with no other new releases to distract movie goers. Zombieland has been receiving great word of mouth and should perform quite well in its second outing and Disney will try to squeeze one more weekend out of its limited engagement of the Toy Story 3-D double feature.
Couples Retreat has quite a few things going for it. The fact that it is the only wide release this weekend will certainly work in its favor. There haven’t been any straight up comedy choices in multiplexes for quite a few weeks. The cast is exceptional, featuring Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman and a slew of others and will certainly be enough to entice ticket buyers. Although the film is receiving some truly awful reviews, the trailer looks very funny and will ensure that audiences come and check it out for its first weekend. The weeks ahead won’t be as kind. Vaughn is the big star here and most of his comedy offerings have done quite well. Take a look.

Even the atrocious Fred Claus found its way to $72M, so despite bad reviews, Couples Retreat has a real chance of having a terrific debut weekend. Look for Couples Retreat to make about $32M.
Among holdovers, last weekend’s champ,
Zombieland has been going strong all week and should continue to play well this weekend. Both critics and audiences have been raving about it (read my review
here) and with only
Retreat opening this weekend,
Zombieland should have a great hold at the box office. Look for it to ease off about 35% to collect another $16.1M, bringing its total to an impressive $49M or so after 10 days.
Disney will try to squeeze some more bucks out of its Toy Story 3-D double feature after an impressive take last weekend. The double feature is a limited 2 week event and should still to do well this weekend. Look for Buzz and Woody to gather another $8.1M this weekend.
