There are 3 new releases hitting theatres this weekend; Where the Wild Things Are adapted from the popular children’s book, Law Abiding Citizen starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx and horror remake, The Stepfather. Wild Things will be the #1 movie for the weekend without a doubt, but the question this weekend is how much money will Paranormal Activity rake in? The supernatural indie thriller is expanding nationwide after a huge haul last weekend from a limited number of screens and will be making a ton of money over the next few weekends, especially with Halloween right around the corner. Based on the popular children’s book by Maurice Sendak, Where the Wild Things Are is set to rule the multiplexes this weekend. Wild Things is an interesting kid’s movie in that it really isn’t meant solely for kids. Eccentric director Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has taken major liberties to flesh out the short book and in turn has crafted a film that targets many demographics. Many adults who have fond memories of the book from their own childhoods will be thrilled to take their kids to see it. Young adults and teens hip to Jonze’s eclectic filmmaking style will want to see the directors latest and of course kids want to see it simply because they would all love the opportunity to hug a wild thing. The reviews have been mixed and it has been said that the film may be too intense for younger children, but none of that is going to matter this weekend. In the coming weeks, Wild Things may lose some momentum because of this, but this weekend Wild Things is going to kick some serious box office ass. The film also has the benefit of playing on IMAX screens across the country at higher ticket prices. Look for Where the Wild Things Are to debut to about $35M this weekend.
Law Abiding Citizen, starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx will be yet another bomb for both actors. Citizen is about a man who gets revenge on his families killer and so far the reviews have been dreadful. Butler doesn’t really have much pull at the box office despite starring in this summer’s hit, The Ugly Truth and 2007’s 300. Truth’s success can really be chalked up to Katherine Heigl and 300… well it didn’t really matter who starred in 300. The same could be said of Jamie Foxx. His last film, The Soloist struck out at the box office, as did Miami Vice and The Kingdom. Together, the two stars may carve out a decent weekend take. Although these films are completely different genres, Wild Things, Paranormal Activity and Couples Retreat will all be stealing audience members from this film. Look for Law Abiding Citizen to collect about $17M this weekend and disappear from theatres soon after.
The final new film for the weekend is horror film, The Stepfather, a remake of the 1987 film of the same name that starred Terry O’Quinn of Lost. This time around, the creepy dad to be is played by Dylan Walsh of FX’s Nip/Tuck. Star power is light and was anyone really crossing their fingers for a remake of The Stepfather? I highly doubt it. The Stepfather series never reached the heights of popularity that other horror franchises of the 80’s did, such as Friday the 13th or Elm Street and therefore there is no buzz from its target audience. With the exception of Zombieland, horror movies have been getting murdered at the box office recently. Jennifer’s Body, Sorority Row and Whiteout all fizzled out, debuting to less than $7M each. Even Halloween 2 failed to come close to the first films box office total. The Stepfather will also have to contend with new kid on the block, Paranormal Activity. Look for The Stepfather to slice and dice its way to about $9M.
The most buzzed about indie horror film since The Blair Witch Project stormed theatres a decade ago, Paranormal Activity, is set to expand from 159 screens to over 800 this weekend. The film collected an astonishing $7.9M last weekend, for a stunning per screen average of $49.4K. The film has been getting great word of mouth and most critics are giving it a thumbs up as well (read my review here). The film being more widely available this weekend will dilute it’s per screen average by a great deal, but it will still probably outpace every other film in release by a comfortable margin. Blair Witch made $26.5K per screen when it expanded from 31 theatres to 1101 for a weekend total of $36.1M. Borat, another film with great buzz, opened on 837 screens to the tune of $26.5M (is nice) and a per screen average of $31.6K. Paranormal Activity’s average will probably fall somewhere in the middle. Look for Paranormal Activity to scare up about $20M this weekend and continue to wreak havoc at the box office until after Halloween. Among holdovers, last weekend’s champ, Couples Retreat, will likely fall about 48% this weekend to gross another $17.8M. Despite getting destroyed by critics (read my review here), audiences have been enjoying the latest Vince Vaughn comedy and will continue to do so over the next few weeks.
