Four new films open at multiplexes this weekend and will try to give a boost to a sagging box office. First up is Righteous Kill, starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. This is the first time in 13 years that the two Oscar winners have starred in a film together, and the first film that they share many scenes together. Fans of the two legendary actors are sure to be excited about this film and that should help Righteous Kill take the top spot at the box office this weekend with about $17M.
Tyler Perry’s latest offering, The Family That Preys, starring Alfre Woodard and Kathy Bates also opens this weekend. This is Perry’s third film release in less than a year and he may find that he is over saturating the market. Sometimes less really is more. Still, his core audience of African American females should come out in force and help The Family That Preys gross about $16M this weekend.
This weekend the Coen brothers follow up their Oscar winner No Country For Old Men with the comedy Burn After Reading. The film stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt and is garnering decent reviews. The Coens generally don’t have huge box office success, and even with the star power of Clooney and Pitt, Burn will likely not break that pattern. Look for Burn After Reading to walk away with $15M this weekend.
Meg Ryan headlines The Women this weekend which also stars Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett Smith, Bette Midler and other big actresses. This film is being killed by critics and looks to have a short shelf life in theatres. The Women should still make about $9M this weekend though, due to all the wives looking to escape their football obsessed husbands.
