BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER 27-29
This was the biggest Thanksgiving weekend in box office history with holdovers New Moon and The Blind Side leading the way. New movie Old Dogs got kicked to the curb, debuting in fourth place. Ninja Assassin fought its way to sixth place, while the newly expanded Fantastic Mr. Fox wasn’t so fantastic coming in at ninth place. Take a look.
Old Dogs starring Robin Williams and John Travolta turned out to be a turkey collecting a weak $16.8M over the Thanksgiving frame with a 5 day total of $24.2M. This was lower than my $18M 3 day prediction and most industry expectations for the film.
Old Dogs director Walt Becker previously steered Travolta to a huge comedy hit with
Wild Hogs which opened with $39.7M in March of 2007, but not this time. Disastrous reviews from critics (
I didn’t think it was that bad) and a ton of competition for the family audience ensured a smaller debut.
Old Dogs may have some legs over the next few weekends as more and more families hit multiplexes.
Ninja Assassin opened to a respectable $13.3M for a kung fu flick, with a 5 day total of $21.2M. This was right on target with my 3 day prediction of $13M. Unfortunately, the target audience of young men has already gotten their kicks, so the future isn’t all that bright for the movie. With terrible reviews and a very violent subject matter, Ninja has no chance of expanding its audience. It may drop more than 60% this weekend.
After an amazing start in very limited release, Fantastic Mr. Fox couldn’t pull in a mainstream audience upon expanding to over 2000 theatres. The film came in number 9 for the weekend with a paltry $7M, lower than my $8M projection. The reviews for the film have been terrific, but the old school stop motion animation clearly didn’t excite kids enough to beg their parents to take them to see it. This being the holiday season, Fox may display great legs in the weeks ahead as word of mouth spreads.
After opening to a jaw dropping $142.8M last weekend, New Moon plummeted 70% to collect another $42.9M, just enough to keep it in first place. This was very close to my call of a 67% drop. The films total stands at $230.7M after 10 days. The film will continue to fall over the next few weekends and may make its way to about $300M by the end of its run in theatres.
For the third time this year Sandra Bullock has achieved the best weekend take of her career as The Blind Side tackled its way to another $40.1M, up 18% from the films debut last weekend. This was even better than my forecast of a 5% bump to $35.8M. The film has collected $100.2M over 10 days and should continue to play well over the holidays. The Blind Side looks like it will top Bullock’s biggest hit, this summers The Proposal ($163.9M total,) by the end of its run. All in all, 2009 has been by far the biggest year of Bullock’s career.
