BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF DECEMBER 4-6
As is tradition, the post Thanksgiving weekend was a slow one at the box office with all four new films opening with less than $10M each. Brothers starring Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal fared the best coming in third place behind holdovers The Blind Side and New Moon. Action thriller Armored and Robert DeNiro’s latest, Everybody’s Fine couldn’t crack the top 5, while horror spoof Transylmania barely made it into the top 20. Take a look. Leading all new releases, domestic drama Brothers came in third place with $9.7M, very close to my $9M prediction. The film has received mixed reviews, but the one thing most critics agree on is the Oscar worthy performances of the three leads, Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman. I thought the film was quite powerful. Brothers should finish its run with about $30M
Tying in sixth place with disaster flick 2012, Armored starring Columbus Short and Matt Dillon, opened with a weak $6.6M, lower than my $7.5M forecast. The film about guards for an armored truck company who decide to steal one of the trucks was basically ignored by audiences and will be lucky to steal away $20M by the end of the caper.
Everybody’s Fine starring Robert DeNiro and an all-star cast failed to generate any excitement at all, opening in tenth place with a less than fine $4M. This was right on with my $4M call. The film has been roundly vilified by critics and audiences chose to listen. Fine will be lucky to gross $10M by the time it leaves theatres.
The final new release for the weekend, Transylmania opened even lower than I expected, collecting a pathetic $274K for the frame. This is one of the worst wide release openings in history and I have to say I’m thrilled about it. The movie looks beyond terrible and I’m not a fan of spoof comedies. If it were up to me, I’d never allow another spoof to be made ever again.
After two weekends in the runner up position, The Blind Side finally sacked New Moon and took first place. The football drama fell 49% to collect another $20.4M right on target with my $20.9M prediction. The films total now stands at $129.3M after three weeks and will more than likely go on to be the biggest touchdown of Sandra Bullock’s career.
After a huge tumble last weekend, New Moon still continued to tumble in its third frame. The vampire saga fell 63% to collect another $15.7M bringing its total to a stellar $255.6M after three weeks. This was right on with my forecast of a 62% drop. Edward and Bella may find themselves with about $280M in receipts by the time the film leaves theatres.
