BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF FEBRUARY 19-21
This weekend audiences visited Shutter Island in droves while most films experienced bigger than usual drop offs coming off of last weekend’s record shattering President Day frame. Even the mighty Avatar experienced a decline of 32%, its largest drop since opening 10 weeks ago. Take a look.
Anchored by solid reviews and a talented cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island easily took the top spot for the weekend, debuting with $40.2M, even higher than my aggressive $38M prediction. Island benefitted from being the sole new release of the weekend and now stands as the biggest opening for both Scorsese and DiCaprio. Here’s a look at Scorsese’s top 5 openings.

Shutter Island’s movie contract is currently trading at $102 on the Cantor Exchange and I expect the film to collect between $100M - $105M during the Popcorn Period*.
Most holdovers were cut down to size this weekend after an extremely successful President’s Day frame. Last weekend’s champ Valentine’s Day plummeted 70% to collect another $17.2M bringing its total to $87.4M after 10 days. I knew the star studded romantic comedy would be in for a steep decline, but it was a bigger fall than my forecast of a 65% drop. The film should find its way to about $125M.
The Wolfman also plunged 69% in its second frame, very close to my call for a 65% drop. The films total now stands at $50.3M and it should collect about $65M during the Popcorn Period. I was very surprised by Percy Jackson’s performance this weekend. The film fell 51%, way more than my prediction of a 38% drop. Jackson has grossed $58.8M so far and may make it to about $90M during the Popcorn Period.
To see how the rest of the top 10 shaped up and how my other predictions for the weekend fared, check out the chart below.
Be sure to come back Thursday for my predictions for this weekend’s new releases Cop Out and The Crazies.

*The Popcorn Period – The settlement date for all movie contracts takes place approximately four weeks after a film has been released in theatres. It is during these 4 weeks that a film will collect money at the box office. If a film makes $50M at the box office during these 4 weeks, the contract will cash out at $50. I refer to this time frame as the Popcorn Period.
