BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF APRIL 23-25
It was a slow weekend at the box office with How to Train Your Dragon topping the charts in its fifth frame with a mere $15.3M. Jennifer Lopez needs a back-up plan for her career after the weak performance of her new romantic comedy The Back-up Plan and The Losers turned out to be just that at the box office. Meanwhile Disney Nature’s Oceans had a solid debut, posting the best per screen average in the top 10. Take a look.
The Back-up Plan opened with a less than spectacular $12.2M, right on target with my $13M prediction. This debut fell far short of Lopez’ last wide release, 2005’s Monster-in-Law ($23.1M) and her film career moving forward could be in jeopardy. Her star power has diminished quite a bit recently with her latest album generating weak buzz and sales and it may be time for J. Lo to reinvent herself. The Back-up Plan is the second film to be distributed by CBS Films and also their second box office disappointment. The first film was Extraordinary Measures starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser which opened with a dismal $6M. At least The Back-up Plan was able to double that.
Comic book adaption The Losers lived up to their namesake at the box office shooting up a paltry $9.4M, very close to my $10M call. The film was met with poor reviews from critics (it was mediocre at best) and this certainly didn’t help the film find an audience other than those of its limited fanbase.
Disney Nature released their second documentary Oceans on Thursday to celebrate Earth Day to solid results. The film made $2.4M on Thursday and $6.1M over the weekend for a total of $8.5M. The weekend take was very close to my $7M forecast but I was slightly high with my $4M call for Thursday’s debut. Although it doesn’t look like it, Oceans had a solid debut in line with last year’s Earth. The doc had the best per screen average in the top 10 collecting about $5K per screen.

Be sure to come back Thursday for my predictions for this weekend’s new releases A Nightmare on Elm Street and Furry Vengeance.
