BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 14-16
Tony Stark fended off Robin Hood as Iron Man 2 remained the #1 movie at the box office this weekend. The Armored Avenger has spent the first two weeks of the summer movie season on top but will be smacked down by big, green ogre, Shrek next weekend. Robin Hood opened in second place and is off to a decent if not solid start. Letters to Juliet and Just Wright both did moderately well, coming in at third and fourth respectively.
Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe’s Robin Hood got off to a decent start stealing $36.1M, on target with my $32M projection. The reviews haven’t been great ( I liked it quite a bit) and it is doubtful that the film will have really strong legs in the weeks ahead, although it should hold up fairly well. The film should find its way to about $100M by the end of its run. Hood’s real money will come from its foreign box office, where it is off to a nice start. The film hauled in $74M from 56 territories putting its global debut at $111.1M.
Letters to Juliet starring Amanda Seyfried and Vanessa Redgrave successfully drew in female viewers and collected $13.5M, close to my $15M call. Juliet should hold up well over the weeks ahead as positive word of mouth spreads and will continue to work as counter-programming to all the movies aimed towards the guys at multiplexes. Juliet could wind up with about $45M-$50M by the end of its run.
Queen Latifah and Common fell in love this weekend in Just Wright and the results were okay. The film pulled in $8.3M at the box office, very close to my $8M prediction. It is doubtful that Just Wright will have legs in the next few weeks and it will likely top out at about $20M.
To see how the rest of the top 10 shaped up and how my other predictions for the weekend fared, check out the chart below.
Be sure to come back Thursday for my predictions for this weekend’s new releases Shrek Forever After and MacGruber.
