BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 21-23
It’s a good thing that Shrek Forever After is the last film in the series because it didn’t even come close to matching the opening of its predecessors signaling that audiences are tired of the character. Shrek 4 will still attain box office heights that will make most other films green with envy, but for the series it will be viewed as a box office disappointment. The only other wide release of the weekend, MacGruber inspired by the SNL skit of the same name, proved to be yet another box office dud for the venerable sketch show. Take a look.
Shrek Forever After opened to a disappointing $70.8M, way lower than my $80M prediction. There was a wide array of predictions for this film ranging from $85M-$105M and the apparently the fourth time was not the charm for the big, green guy. The reviews were mixed, but better than Shrek the Third’s reviews. I personally think it was better than both part 2 and 3 and my kids absolutely loved it. The audience at the screening I attended seemed to really enjoy it as well and actually broke out into applause at the end of the film. I think positive word of mouth will give the film a couple of strong weekends until Toy Story 3 opens on June 18th.
Will Forte’s hapless hero may be able to stop most explosive devices from going off, but he couldn’t diffuse the box office bomb that his movie has proven to be. MacGruber opened to a disastrous $4M, lower than my already low $5M forecast for the film. This is another film that had a wide range of predictions from $6M -$25M. I knew there was no way that this film would be a hit and although I never tend to root for any film to fail, I’m quite happy that this movie is a flop. If it were a hit, to me it would represent the end of western civilization as we know it. It is difficult to make any skit into a good feature length film but it is impossible to make a good film out of a horrible skit. MacGruber has never been funny and never will be.
To see how the rest of the top 10 shaped up and how my other predictions for the weekend fared, check out the chart below.
Be sure to come back Thursday for my predictions for this weekend’s new releases Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
