BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JUNE 4-6
The summer box office season has been off to a shaky start with Iron Man, Shrek and Carrie Bradshaw performing below expectations but with this weekend’s four new releases… who am I kidding? This weekend is going to be another bust. Not one of the new releases has any break out potential. Get Him to the Greek and Killers will be mid-range hits, Marmaduke will do just okay and Splice will be an outright bomb. Take a look.
I’m pressed for time this week so I won’t bore you with my usual analysis and will get right to it.
Get Him to the Greek stars Russell Brand and Jonah Hill in a spin-off of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The movie is doing well with critics and will probably be the top earner out of the new releases. Sarah Marshall opened with $17.7M and Greek should fare the same. Look for it to open with about $18M.
The Bounty Hunter… umm, I mean Killers stars Ashton Kutcher and Kathryn Heigl. In this romantic action comedy, the two fall in love and soon after she discovers he is a spy. The two go on the run, blah, blah, blah. We’ve seen this movie before, so it all comes down to the star power of Kutcher and Heigl. Both have established decent track records at the box office, but because this film doesn’t look all that original, it will be one of their lesser hits. Look for Killers to fight its way to about $16M this weekend.
Marmaduke is yet another canine movie, which are usually hits (Hotel for Dogs, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Marley and Me) but this one is gonna be a dog (aren’t I clever?). The film faces competition from Shrek 4 (which has had pretty strong legs) and will all but disappear when Woody and Buzz invade multiplexes in two weeks. Look for Marmaduke to bark up about $12M this weekend.
The last new film, Splice has absolutely no chance of being a hit. The trailer makes it look like Species, although I hear it is a much smarter film than that. Adrien Brody has no box office appeal; in fact he may be a detriment. Look for Splice to make about $8M and be the first of two bombs that Brody has opening this summer. The other will be Predators.
Shrek Forever After will hold fairly well in its third outing and take the #1 spot yet again with about $26.8M. This will bring the green guys total gross to about $185M.
