BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JUNE 4-6
Despite four new releases this weekend, this continued to be a bummer of a summer at the box office. While Get Him to the Greek and Killers performed okay, Marmaduke and Splice were outright box office dogs. The quartet of under performers made it possible for Shrek Forever After to be the #1 film for the third weekend in a row. Things might start to heat up next weekend with the releases of The A-Team and The Karate Kid and the following weekend, Woody and Buzz are back in Toy Story 3, which is guaranteed to be a huge hit.
Get Him to the Greek starring Russell Brand and Jonah Hill is a spin-off of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and as such, performed quite well this weekend. Greek opened with a solid $17.4M, right on track with Marshall’s $17.7M debut two years ago. This was right on target with my $18M prediction. The reviews and word of mouth has been positive, so Greek should have decent holds in the weeks ahead and make it to about $60M overall.
Killers starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl came in third place with $16.1M, dead on with my $16M prediction. The film has been slammed by critics and probably won’t be that strong a performer in the weeks ahead. Look for Killers to shoot up about $40M by the end of its run.
Generally movies about dogs aimed at the family audience do really well at the box office, but canine comedy, Marmaduke was put in the dog house this weekend, collecting a slim $11.3M. This was in line with my $12M forecast. Marmaduke was no match for Shrek, whose fourth film has been holding up really well, despite getting off to a rough start three weeks ago. Marmaduke was up against ticket price inflation as well and with prices so high, parents have to be more choosy about what they take their kids to see. I’m sure plenty of families are saving their money for Toy Story 3.
Horror film, Splice, generated very little interest from filmgoers this weekend, debuting poorly in eighth place with $7.5M. This was very close to my $8M call. Splice stars Adrien Brody and Sara Polley, both of whom have no real pull at the box office. The film was also hurt by trailers and commercials that made it look like your run of the mill creature feature, instead of the high concept thriller it is meant to be. I haven’t seen the film, so I can’t really comment on whether it is actually good or not.
To see how the rest of the top 10 shaped up and how my other predictions for the weekend fared, check out the chart below.
Be sure to come back Thursday for my predictions for this weekend’s new releases The A Team and The Karate Kid.
