BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JULY 9-11
This weekend two new films open; 3-D animated family film, Despicable Me and 80’s action movie revival, Predators. Last weekend’s #1 film Eclipse will certainly have a huge drop off this weekend leaving the two new films to compete for this weekend’s box office crown. Will Despicable Me be able to fend off Predators? Take a look.
Things have been pretty crazy here at FilmGo. I’m working on making some changes to the site and as such I won’t be giving you the usual long winded explanations for my predictions this week.
A few months back I predicted that Despicable Me would likely open in the neighborhood of $55M much like Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar: Back 2 Africa. Although I believe the film is worthy of opening in this range, it has been tracking more in the range of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (low 30’s). The reviews for the film have been really solid and the marketing has been omnipresent. Every time I turn on the TV or surf the internet I see the cute little minions from the film smiling at me. The film will also benefit from the trailer being featured in front of Toy Story 3. Of course, Toy Story 3 is still packing them in and will serve as competition. Despicable Me will also face competition from The Last Airbender and The Karate Kid. Nonetheless, I’m still high on this film. Most industry expectations have this film opening in the low to mid 30’s, but I’m going with my gut on this one and sticking with $55M.
Continuing the current all things 80’s are back trend, Predators will attempt to revive the franchise that started with the now classic, Schwarzenegger action flick Predator back in 1987. In my opinion, this franchise is tired and will have a difficult time pulling in new fans. The reviews have been surprisingly good, but nonetheless, the audience for this film will be frontloaded, consisting of diehard fans of the property and the film will quickly lose steam in the weeks ahead. Look for Predators to take in about $24M this weekend.
