BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JULY 23-25
After a nice debut last weekend, Christopher Nolan’s Inception will attempt to defend its box office crown against newcomer Salt starring Angelina Jolie. Without a doubt, it is going to be a tight race to the finish line. Also opening this week, Ramona and Beezus starring Joey King and Disney Channel star Selena Gomez based on the best-selling book by Beverly Cleary.
Salt stars Angelina Jolie as a CIA agent accused of being a Russian sleeper spy. The film is action packed and certainly plays to Jolie’s box office strength. Her biggest hits have all been action movies. Here’s a look at her ten biggest box office hits.

With the exception of animated movies, action roles have been Jolie’s bread and butter at the box office. In fact, she is truly the only female action star working today.  Salt has been receiving mixed reviews which may dampen its earning potential (adult audiences tend to pay attention to these things), but nonetheless, it should be a solid hit. The film will also face stiff competition from Inception.  Look for Salt to collect about $35M this weekend and find its way to about $95M by the end of its run.
Adapted from the best-selling children’s novel by Beverly Cleary, Ramona and Beezus follows the misadventures of young grade schooler Ramona Quimby played by newcomer Joey King. Beezus her older sister is played by Disney Channel star Selena Gomez and she may very well be the key to this film’s success at the box office.  Disney has had a long history of creating stars from Hillary Duff to Zac Efron to their biggest success story Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez has some big potential. This is the first book by Beverly Cleary to be adapted to the big screen so there’s no real track record to speak of here. The film should appeal to young girls under the age of 12 but will have a difficult time pulling in any other audience. The competition for the family audience is pretty fierce right now. Despicable Me is entering its third frame and is still packing in audiences and Toy Story 3 is still a viable competitor. Next weekend another family film, Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore opens, so there is a strong possibility that Ramona will get lost in the shuffle. The film should open to about $8M and find its way to about $30M by the end of its run in theatres.
