Early estimates for the Labor Day weekend suggest that George Clooney’s assassin drama The American will be #1 for the holiday frame, followed closely by Machete. This weekend’s other new release, Going the Distance seems likely to open in a distant 5th place.
The American starring George Clooney took 1st place on Friday with an estimated $4.1M. The film should collect about $14M-$15M over the 4 day weekend and wind up with about $17M since its debut Wednesday.
Revenge flick Machete starring Danny Trejo opened with $3.6M and is on track to make about $12M over the holiday frame.
Drew Barrymore’s latest rom-com Going the Distance failed to generate too much excitement, landing in 5th place with $2.2M. The film should make about $8M over the 4 day span.
Among holdovers, Takers took in another $3M for a possible $12M holiday weekend, The Last Exorcism scared up $2.4M and could make about $9M over 4 days.
