BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 24-26
This weekend there are 4 new films entering the marketplace in wide release; Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, comedy You Again starring Kristen Bell and indie flick, The Virginity Hit from producers, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. Which film will be #1 this weekend? Take a look.
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is the sequel to Oliver Stone’s Wall Street from 1987. Once again the film stars Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko, perhaps his most iconic film role. Douglas is joined by Shia LaBeouf as his young protégé along with Carey Mulligan (as his estranged daughter) and Josh Brolin. To be honest, I can’t see this movie being a huge hit for a couple of reasons. I seriously don’t think anyone was clamoring for a sequel. I also don’t think the original is beloved as people think. Sure it serves as a rite of passage to any young guy entering into the world of high finance, but outside of the Wall Street crowd, does anyone really care about this movie and these characters? I don’t really think so. Look for Wall Street to take in about $18M this weekend.
Visionary director Zack Snyder sets his sights on the family audience with Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, based on the best-selling book series. The film looks visually stunning, but I don’t believe the film has the crossover appeal needed to become a huge hit at the box office. This film is for the boys and I don’t think any young girls are going to be interested, cutting Guardians box office potential in half. Last year at this time, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs opened with $30M and I think Guardians will open with roughly half that amount. Look for The Owls of Ga’Hoole to fly away with about $16M this weekend.
Comedy You Again boasts a talented cast including Kristen Bell, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis and the white hot Betty White but I don’t expect this to be a big hit. The film will face stiff competition from last week’s surprise comedy hit Easy A starring Emma Stone and will also have a difficult time expanding its reach beyond young women. Look for You Again to make about $8M this weekend.
The final new release for the weekend is indie comedy, The Virginity Hit, produced by Will Ferrell and frequent collaborator Adam McKay. The film is opening in about 700 theatres and will face an uphill battle to attract an audience. The marketing campaign has been weak at best and I believe this film will disappear from theatres as quickly as it entered them. I’ll be surprised if The Virginity Hit makes more than $500K this weekend.
