BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 6-8
This weekend, Paramount’s Thor officially kicked off the summer movie season. The latest Marvel superhero to hit the big screen had a strong debut thanks to incredibly strong reviews from critics and a strong fanbase that was anxiously awaiting Thor’s release. Two wedding themed romantic comedies opened this weekend as well to serve as counter-programming to the testosterone laced Thor, both of which performed pretty well. Warner Bros. Something Borrowed starring Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson met most industry expectations while Sony’s Jumping the Broom opened stronger than expected. Overall the top 10 generated an estimated $149.5 million, down a scant 10.8% from 2010 when Paramount’s sequel Iron Man 2 kicked off the summer with a powerful debut of $128.1 million. The overall Top 10 has been up over last year over the past three weekends, but no one expected Thor to be able to compete with fellow Marvel superhero Iron Man. Still, based on the strength of the Norse god and Fast Five, the Top 10 was in striking distance of last year’s total and kicked off the summer movie season on a positive note. This weekend will be a different story however with the release of vampire movie Priest from Sony and another wedding themed comedy, Bridesmaids from Universal. I’m not expecting much from either of these films and there will be no way that the overall Top 10 will be able to compete with last year when Iron Man 2 continued its assault on the box office, pulling in another $52 million and Universal’s Robin Hood debuted with $36.1 million.
Thor hammered its way to a strong $66 million opening according to estimates and should hold up well this weekend based on strong word of mouth and rave reviews from critics. This was the third largest big screen debut for any Marvel character and proves that Marvel is on the right track connecting its films to lead up to next summer’s hugely anticipated superhero ensemble film, The Avengers. Here’s a look at how other Marvel superhero’s performed with their debut films.

Although Thor didn’t reach the heights of Spider-Man or Iron Man, this was a super debut for a character that is not even close to as popular as the web-slinger and a movie that featured a lead actor who isn’t as widely known and respected as Robert Downey Jr. Thor also had to deal with competition from Universal’s Fast Five, whereas most of these other films had the playing field all to themselves. The film should hold up quite well next weekend with only expected bomb Priest from Sony Screen Gems opening to challenge it (Universal’s Bridesmaids also opens but will covet an entirely different audience). Normally a film like this is in for a sophomore weekend drop in the neighborhood of 60%, but I think Thor will likely fall about 50%.
Sony Screen Gem’s Jumping the Broom starring Angela Bassett, Laz Alonso and Paula Patton opened slightly stronger than most industry expectations, debuting with an estimated $13.7 million. The film is about two African-American families from different economic backgrounds who come together to celebrate a wedding on Martha’s Vineyard. Generally films aimed at African-Americans don’t fare that well at the box office unless the name Tyler Perry is attached to it and Broom once again proved this to be true, not even coming within striking distance of most of Perry’s openings. The film did outperform fellow urban wedding themed comedy, Our Family Wedding ($7.6 million)and last summer’s Just Wright ($8.3 million) starring Queen Latifah and Common. The audience for Broom was likely rather front-loaded so it is doubtful that the film will have any real legs. Look for Jumping the Broom to leave theatres with approximately $32 million under its belt.
Warner Bros. romantic comedy Something Borrowed starring Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson performed like most average rom-com’s despite mostly dismal reviews from critics. The film grossed an estimated $13.2 million, right in line with most expectations and served mostly a female audience not interested in big summer blockbusters. The poor reviews may not have hurt Something Borrowed’s opening weekend, but moving forward, they are going to prove to be a problem. Borrowed will also loose most of its target audience this weekend to Bridesmaids and will likely disappear from theatres rather quickly. The film should manage about a $30 million finish.
