Moviegoers are offered three new films this weekend as Yes Man, Seven Pounds and The Tale of Despereaux invade multiplexes. It is quite a mixed bag ranging from comedy to heavy drama to animated adventure, and ones box office take should not influence the other.
Jim Carrey returns to his comedy roots for the first time in 3 years with Yes Man. Carrey plays a man who has never taken any risks, says no to everything in life, until one day he learns the power of the word yes and hilarious antics ensue. Jim Carrey fans can rejoice in the fact that the former comedy king is back after a long absence, but this one looks more like it will perform like the terrible Fun With Dick and Jane than his comedy classics such as Bruce Almighty and Liar, Liar. Don’t get me wrong, I happen to be a big fan of Mr. Carrey’s, but I don’t know how his comedy styling’s will hold up in a world dominated by Judd Apatow comedies (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad, Pineapple Express, to name but a few). Look for Yes Man to make about $21M, just enough to open at #1 this weekend.
Will Smith stars in Seven Pounds, a movie about… well… I don’t know. I’ve watched the trailer multiple times and still have no real idea as to what it is about. Amazing in today’s day and age when the trailer usually shows the whole movie. Because of the ambiguous nature of the trailer, I am extremely intrigued and I’m betting other moviegoers will be as well. Unfortunately, the reviews haven’t been too kind and this will keep some Will Smith fans at home. Seven Pounds looks to be the first Will Smith vehicle that will end his streak of 8 100M+ hits. That’s not to say that it won’t be a modest hit though. Seven Pounds will open to $18M this weekend.
The third new release this weekend is animated adventure film, The Tale of Despereaux, featuring the voice talents of Matthew Broderick and Dustin Hoffman. Despereaux isn’t based on a hit property and because of that should not have a big opening this weekend. It will however, have a chance to make some money next week, with all the kids off from school. Look for The Tale of Despereaux to debut with about $10M this weekend. To see the rest of my predictions, check out the chart below.
