This weekend offers 3 new releases for moviegoers to see and also the expansion of Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino from limited to wide release. Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway square off in the comedy Bride Wars. Other new releases include the horror film, The Unborn and the marital drama, Not Easily Broken.
Hudson and Hathaway star as 2 best friends who due to a clerical error, have their dream weddings scheduled on the same day, and from there the Bride Wars ensue. Hudson and Hathaway are both highly likable and the trailer offers a quite a few laughs so this movie should be a hit. Bride Wars should collect about $22M this weekend.
Writer/director David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, the Blade trilogy) hopes to frighten audiences this weekend with his latest effort, The UnbornThe Unborn tells the story of a young woman being haunted by a spirit that is trying to take her over. January is generally a good month for horror films, with hit movies like Hostel and White Noise successfully opening during this month in past years. With a teenager friendly rating of PG-13, The Unborn should open with about $18M this weekend.
Opening in 600 theatres, director Bill Duke’s marital drama, Not Easily Broken, based on the popular novel of the same name, hopes to crack the top 10 this weekend. Not Easily Broken tells the story of a marriage put to the test after the wife is seriously injured in a car crash. This movie will appeal to African-American women and churchgoers due to its faith based theme. The marketing push hasn’t been that great, but you can’t count out the power of churchgoers, the same audience that propelled Kirk Cameron’s Fireproof to become a decent hit in late 2008. Not Easily Broken could make about $5M this weekend.
Gran Torino, Clint Eastwood’s latest directorial effort, expands from 84 to over 2800 theatres this weekend. Eastwood still has plenty of box office power and the film has been playing really well in its limited run. Look for Gran Torino to make about $21M this weekend. To see the rest of my predictions, check out the chart below.
