Is Clint Eastwood unstoppable? After a half a century in Hollywood, Eastwood at the age of 78 just had the best wide opening of his career. Gran Torino exploded into over 2800 theatres this weekend and collected $29M, destroying his previous best of $18.1M for Space Cowboys, 8 years ago. I don’t think there is another filmmaker in history to enjoy this kind of success in the twilight years of their career and it doesn’t look like he is slowing down anytime soon. The man has directed 4 movies since 2006 (Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Changeling and Gran Torino), all of which received major award buzz and great reviews, not to mention decent box office. I hope he never retires and makes movies until he is 100.
Opening in second place, the wedding comedy, Bride Wars, starring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway, collected an impressive $21.5M. Bride Wars not only proves the star power of both its leads, but it also makes Kate Hudson a successful producer. With January being dominated by Football playoffs and the Super Bowl, Bride Wars should continue to play well to women seeking a little break from their sports obsessed husbands. Bride Wars should end its walk down the aisle with about $70M in wedding presents.
Opening in third place, was the PG-13 horror flick, The Unborn, with $21M. This was a stunning debut that exceeded most industry expectations, but expect The Unborn, to disappear quickly in the weeks ahead as the competition heats up. The Unborn’s awesome debut was helped by a lack of horror films recently, but with My Bloody Valentine 3D opening next weekend, look for The Unborn to drop a steep 60% in its second frame.
Marital drama, Not Easily Broken, opened on 724 screens with an impressive $5.6M. The audience was largely made up of African- American females and should continue to rake in the bucks over the next few weekends. To see how my predictions fared, check out the chart below.
