This weekend two new releases will try and make a splash at the box office, the Will Ferrell comedy, Step Brothers and The X Files: I Want to Believe. The real question however, is how much money The Dark Knight will run away with in its second weekend.
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly (who previously starred in Talladega Nights together) team up again to bring us the R rated comedy Step Brothers. This is a good weekend for this film to open as there are no real comedies to compete with. The R rating will hurt though, keeping all of Will Ferrell’s younger fans away. Will’s last R rated comedy, Semi-Pro debuted with about $15 million in February, but Step Brothers should perform better due to its summer release date.  Expect Step Brothers to claim the number two spot this weekend with about $28 million.
Next we have The X Files: I Want to Believe. As a fan of the show, I want to believe that this film will be great and be a big hit, but it won’t be. It has been 10 years since the last film in the series and interest in the series has died down quite a bit. That’s not to say that The X Files doesn’t still have a nice size fanbase, but it will be difficult to bring in audiences who aren’t already big fans. Most reviews have said that the film plays out like a longer episode of the show and it doesn’t compare to the best episodes of the series. I’m a big fan of the series and even I really don’t have any interest in the movie. That being said, The X Files will make $13 million this weekend. It will disappear from multiplexes shortly after that and will spell the end of The X files film franchise.
Now let’s talk Batman. The Dark Knight has been playing well all week, breaking the Monday record grossing $24.5 million and pulling in another $20 million on Tuesday. By Wednesday it’s gross was at a towering $222 million. By the end of this weekend, expect The Dark Knight to pass the $300 million dollar mark breaking yet another record. The record for reaching $300 million is 16 days, set by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Batman will have accomplished this feat in a mere 10 days and will be the highest grossing film of the year so far after only 2 weekends. Expect a drop of about 55% this weekend to about $73 million.
Mamma Mia! still has the female audience all to its self this weekend and should drop about 40% to $15 million. The Will Smith vehicle, Hancock, has been holding up really well and should drop another 45% this weekend with $8 million added to it’s gross passing the $200 million mark. Journey to the Center of the Earth should fall about 35% to $8.5 million.
