Both love and fear are in the air as both Friday the 13th and Valentine’s Day fall this weekend. Sort of a weird combo. This would’ve been a good time to premier a new genre of film, the Romantic horror film. A Nightmare on Valentine’s Day tells the tale of a love sick Freddy Krueger who just wants to meet the woman of his dreams (nightmares) and start a family. All kidding aside, movie goers are offered 3 new choices, the remake of horror classic, Friday the 13th, comedy Confessions of a Shopaholic and crime thriller, The International.
Producer Michael Bay takes another stab at relaunching another hit horror franchise from the 80’s, Friday the 13th. Bay has previously relaunched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hitcher and The Amityville Horror and plans to tackle A Nightmare on Elm Street next. The return of Jason Voorhees will certainly be his most successful relaunch to date and will easily win the box office crown this weekend. With this weekend being Friday the 13th, the movie should perform quite well and will even perform well on Valentine’s Day with dateless boys looking for something to do. I think Friday the 13th will pull in about $43M over the Friday to Sunday period.
Isla Fisher stars as a shopping addict in Confessions of a Shopaholic based on the best-selling novel of the same name. This movie is the anti Friday the 13th and should attract young woman who find themselves dateless on Valentine’s Day. Shopaholic will have to deal with competition from last week’s champ, He’s Just Not That Into You, which should perform quite well in its second weekend. I would expect Confessions of a Shopaholic to make about $16M this weekend.
The last new entry this weekend is crime thriller, The International, starring Clive Owen.   The film is being marketed as an action flick, but is really more of a thriller. The reviews have been mixed and The International will have to compete with Liam Neeson’s red hot Taken. Clive Owen is a great actor but he is not known for his bankability at the box office. The International should gross about $10M over the 3 day frame. To see the rest of my predictions, check out the chart below.
