This Is It opened on Wednesday with a disappointing $7.4M including $2.2M from Tuesday midnight showings. This is way lower than expected. Certainly way lower than the $17M Sony was hoping for and also way lower than the original Wednesday estimates announced this morning ($12M). The film did gross another $13M worldwide so more than likely Sony will be making money from the film, just not as much as they had hoped for.

Its Halloween weekend and horror movies Paranormal Activity and Saw VI aren’t the talk of the town. Instead all the box office frenzy is focused on Michael Jackson’s This Is It. How much money will it make? Can it possibly come close to AEG’s 5 day prediction (it opened on Wednesday) of $250M? Not very likely after early estimates for Wednesday’s gross have come in at about $12M. One way or another, Jackson will take the #1 spot for the weekend, but it is not shaping up to be the runaway blockbuster that all the hype surrounding the pic suggested. Let’s take a look.

Michael Jackson’s This Is It is a tough film to review. Culled from rehearsal footage for his planned 50 shows at the 02 Arena in London, This Is It isn’t really a concert film nor is it a documentary offering an intimate look into the enigmatic entertainer. It’s more like an intimate peep. Nonetheless, watching Jackson prepare for what was sure to be an amazing concert is quite magical.

BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 23-25
With Halloween right around the corner, the box office was ruled by scary movies. Indie sensation, Paranormal Activity, expanded to just fewer than 2000 theatres and took the top spot for the first time in its fifth week in release. The only thing scary about Saw VI was its box office performance. The latest in the series was down 50% from the opening of the last installment last year and the money making horror franchise may be on its last legs. The other three releases for the weekend, Astro Boy, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant and Amelia failed to cause too much excitement and were basically dead on arrival.

Famous film critic Roger Ebert wrote an amazing article about the rise of 3-D films at multiplexes and has come up with quite a few points that are nearly impossible to argue with. Of course, I happen to agree with everything he is saying and truly believe he is 100% correct. Anyway it is a great article and I think you should check it out. I've copied the article for your reading enjoyment.

Halloween is in the air with several spooky films ready to occupy the charts. It has become a tradition for a new Saw movie to hit multiplexes right before the frightful holiday and this year the sixth installment arrives. Joining Saw VI is Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, a vamp flick aimed at teenage boys and girls. Astro Boy flies into theatres to the delight of young boys everywhere and speaking of flying, Hillary Swank stars in Amelia, a bio-pic about legendary aviatrix, Amelia Earhart. Outside of Saw VI and Vampire’s Assistant, several other scary movies from weeks past will be dominating at the box office, including Paranormal Activity, The Stepfather and Zombieland.

BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 16-18
This weekend Max was not only king of the wild things; he was the king of the box office as Spike Jonze’s adaption of Where the Wild Things Are opened at #1. Law Abiding Citizen starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx had a strong opening at #2. Paranormal Activity expanded its theatre count and its box office revenue, landing in third place on the charts, but it’s per screen average was more than triple that of Wild Things average. Horror remake, The Stepfather, opened in fifth place, outperforming several fright flicks that have tanked over the last couple of weeks. Take a look.

Thanksgiving has come early for Warner Bros. as Where the Wild Things Are is one big, fat turkey. A movie for grownups masquerading as a kids flick, Wild Things doesn’t succeed on either level and in turn polarizes both of its audiences. Who was this film made for? I’ll answer my own question. Director/writer Spike Jonze has made a self indulgent mess of a movie strictly for himself.
