Let me begin by saying that I love Quentin Tarantino. He is one of my all time favorite filmmakers. In fact, True Romance (written by him) is my favorite movie of all time so I don’t take this review lightly and in no means am I just trying to tear him apart. That being said, Death Proof is the worst piece of trash movie that I’ve ever seen. It is absolute rubbish and if I could have a procedure done to erase it from my mind, I would do it, no matter what the side effects were. It’s that bad. Given I’ve seen plenty of bad movies in my day, but the fact that this was made by one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, makes it that much worse.

Writer/director Quentin Tarantino is back in glorious form with his World War II epic, Inglorious Basterds. At times the film is deadly serious and violent while at others it is tongue in cheek and playful. At all times Basterds is engrossing and entertaining and is a fitting entry in the Tarantino genre. Yes, that’s right genre. No matter what his films are about, whether they are a homage to pulp novels or a revenge fantasy starring a female samurai, Tarantino’s films are uniquely Tarantino, laced with brilliant dialogue, awesome camera angles, title cards and plenty of comedic violence.

District 9, a faux documentary, violent sci-fi action extravaganza, social message film brought to you by producer Peter Jackson and first time director Neill Blomkamp is at times brilliant and at times ridiculously stupid. The film is based on a short film from Blomkamp called Alive in Joberg. The first half of the film is amazing but from that point on, the film degrades into the bastard stepchild of Transformers and Terminator Salvation. It really is a shame because District 9 could’ve been one of the best sci-fi films ever. I generally make it a point not to expose plot points in my reviews but I don’t think I can express what I loved and hated about the film without doing so. That being said, there may be some spoilers ahead, so read on at your own risk.

Yo Joe! Stephen Sommers big screen adaption of the popular toy property is exactly what it should be; it is a big, loud, fun, action packed, kick ass summer popcorn movie that perfectly captures the spirit of the cartoons and comic books from the 80’s. I can tell you right now that any bad reviews you’ve read are from critics who clearly don’t get the appeal of the Real American Heroes. Fortunately for us, Sommers does. Whether you’re a fan of G.I. Joe (I am) or just like big budget, action spectacles, you will enjoy every pulse pounding moment of The Rise of Cobra.

Judd Apatow’s third film, Funny People, starring Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann is not the raunchy comedy one would expect from the director of The 40 Year Old Virgin or from seeing the trailers. The film is more drama than comedy, but to classify it as a dramedy would be a mistake. Funny People really is a character study more than anything else that focuses on George Simmons (Sandler), a stand-up comic turned movie star who begins to reevaluate his life after being diagnosed with a rare blood disorder. The film rambles a bit, may be a bit over long and really never comes to a tidy conclusion, but that’s part of the charm of the film. If Funny People ended with George achieving the perfect life for himself, it wouldn’t feel real. It would’ve been just another run of the mill romantic comedy and this film has way more to offer than that.
