It’s a scary weekend at multiplexes this weekend as 2 fright flicks go head to head. Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2 is going to have to square off with The Final Destination 3-D for the attention of horror fans everywhere. It seems rather strange to me that 2 high profile horror movies are opening on the same weekend, but it certainly makes it interesting from a box office perspective. Also opening in 1300 theatres nationwide is Taking Woodstock from director Ang Lee. Which horror film will reign supreme? Let’s take a look.

BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF AUGUST 21-23
Quentin Tarantino enjoyed his biggest opening ever this weekend as Inglorious Basterds captured the top spot and scalped all competition. Kids flick Shorts from director Robert Rodriguez proved it will have a short lifespan in theatres and Post Grad starring Alexis Bledel failed to connect with audiences. Last weekend’s champ, District 9 had to settle for second place in its second frame.

This weekend there are 3 new movies in wide release; Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, Shorts from Robert Rodriguez and Post Grad starring Alexis Bledel. It’s no mystery that Tarantino’s WW II epic will nab the top spot, but will the star power of Brad Pitt help Basterds achieve Quentin’s biggest opening yet? Let’s take a look.

BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF AUGUST 14-16
5 new movies jammed their way into multiplexes this weekend in an effort to capitalize on the last few weeks of the summer movie going season to decidedly split results. Sci-fi thriller District 9 invaded the #1 spot with an explosive first 3 days and The Time Traveler’s Wife starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana had a solid debut in third place. Japanese animated film, Ponyo, opened to middling results, while The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard starring Jeremy Piven and Bandslam starring Vanessa Hudgens failed to connect with audiences.

With the summer movie season almost over, 5 new releases are cramming their way into multiplexes this weekend. The movie with the biggest box office potential is sci-fi film, District 9. Beyond that, The Time Traveler’s Wife has potential to reach its target audience of women but will have to contend with competition from last weekend’s Julie & Julia. The other 3 releases won’t have much effect on the overall box office with each of them set to debut under $10M. They are The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard starring Jeremy Piven, Bandslam starring Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) and animated film, Ponyo. The real question is whether any of these films will be strong enough to stop G.I Joe from rising to the top spot for the second week in a row. Let’s take a look.

BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF AUGUST 7-9
This weekend G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra battled its way to a fierce #1 opening despite poor reviews from critics. Meryl Streep enjoyed another solid opening as her latest film Julie & Julia opened in second. The final new release, horror thriller A Perfect Getaway failed to connect with audiences and debuted in 7th place.

Yo Joe! This weekend Paramount unleashes its latest film based on a popular toy property, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra hoping to achieve the same success that they had with Transformers. Joe won’t be as big as Transformers, but I think it will be a hit nonetheless. Also opening this weekend, Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams and yet another horror flick, A Perfect Getaway starring Steve Zahn and Timothy Olyphant along with a couple of other name actors. Joe will easily battle its way to the top spot, but how high can it fly? Let’s take a look.

BOX OFFICE RESULTS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JULY 31-AUGUST 2
Judd Apatow’s latest film, Funny People starring Adam Sandler was no laughing matter at the box office this weekend as it grossed way less money than expected. Although the film comfortably debuted at the top of the charts, it led the weakest box office weekend of the summer so far with only one movie grossing more than $20M. Kiddie comedy, Aliens in the Attic opened to middling results while the latest horror flick, The Collector failed to collect hardly anything.
