BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY 3-5 2013
There is only one new film opening in wide release this weekend: May has arrived and the summer movie season officially begins with the launch of Iron Man 3 from Disney/Marvel. What better way to start off the summer than with a Marvel movie, after all, this is the seventh time Marvel superheroes have kicked off the season. There is no question that the film will have a huge opening, but just how high can this latest outing of the armored avenger soar? Based on my estimates the Top 10 will generate about $207.2 million over the weekend, down about 19% from last year when Marvel’s The Avengers from Disney led the overall Top 10 to a total of $246.6 million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF APRIL 19-21 2013
There is only one new film opening in wide release this weekend: Tom Cruise continues on his comeback tour with the release of sci-fi epic Oblivion from Universal. After the hugely successful fourth installment of Mission: Impossible and solid worldwide earner Jack Reacher, Cruise has earned goodwill from audiences once again and Oblivion should serve as a strong appetizer for the summer movie season beginning in May. Based on my estimates the Top 10 will generate about $104.4 million over the weekend, down about 14% from last year when Think Like a Man from Sony and The Lucky One from Warner Bros. led the overall Top 10 to a total of $119 million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF APRIL 5-7 2013
There are two new films opening in wide release this weekend: Producer Sam Raimi goes back to his roots with the release of R-rated horror reboot Evil Dead from Sony and Universal opens up its vaults with the 3D rerelease of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. Evil Dead should have a strong opening due to some great buzz and the fact that original writer-director Raimi is fully on board for the new version. 3D rereleases haven’t been doing all that well at the box office but the promise of seeing Spielberg’s classic on the big screen should all but guarantee an opening in the mid-teens for Jurassic Park 3D. Based on my estimates the Top 10 will generate about $114.5million over the weekend, down about 0.5% from last year when The Hunger Games from Lionsgate and American Reunion from Universalled the overall Top 10 to a total of $115.1 million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF MARCH 29-31 2013
There are three new films opening in wide release this holiday weekend: Paramount adds Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Bruce Willis to the mix in delayed action sequel GI Joe: Retaliation, Lionsgate releases Tyler Perry’s latest directorial effort Temptation and Open Road Films goes after the Twilight audience with the adaption of The Host by author Stephenie Meyer. GI Joe: Retaliation will easily gun down the competition this weekend and take the top spot but its opening weekend will be diluted due to the fact that it is opening on Thursday. Temptation should fare decently thanks to Perry’s fanbase but The Host may suffer the same fate as Beautiful Creatures despite being from the author of the Twilight series. Based on my estimates the Top 10 will generate about $146.1million over the weekend, up about 5% from last year when The Hunger Games from Lionsgate and Wrath of the Titans from Warner Bros.led the overall Top 10 to a total of $138.8million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF MARCH 15-17 2013
There are three new films opening in wide release this weekend: Bruce and Evan Almighty (Jim Carrey and Steve Carell) team-up for magical comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone from Warner Bros. and Halle Berry tries to save a life and her film career in thriller The Call from Sony. Carrey isn’t the draw that he used to be, but the promise of seeing him and Carell face off as rival magicians should sell some tickets. Carell has a good size fanbase that will likely support the film in the long run, but they may not show up on opening weekend. His films (Crazy Stupid Love, Date Night, The 40 Year-old Virgin) tend to have strong legs at the box office. The Call stars Berry as a 911 operator who is desperately trying to save a young women’s life. The actress has never packed much of a punch at the box office and it is likely that moviegoers will choose not to answer The Call. Based on my estimates, the Top 10 will generate about $89.4 million over the weekend, down about 4.6% from last year when 21 Jump Street from Sony and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax from Universal led the overall Top 10 to a total of $93.5 million.

There are two new films opening in wide release this weekend: Disney releases PG rated adventure Oz: The Great and Powerful starring James Franco as the wizard of Oz and FilmDistrict releases R-rated crime thriller Dead Man Down starring Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace. Oz: The Great and Powerful should follow in the footsteps of fellow March release Alice in Wonderland and clean up at the box office although it will not perform as well. Dead Man Down doesn’t feature a cast that sells tickets and will likely have a small debut. Based on my estimates the Top 10 will generate about $125.6 million over the weekend, up about 8.3% from last year when Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax from Universaland John Carter from Disney led the overall Top 10 to a total of $116 million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF FEBRUARY 1-3 2013
There are two new films opening in wide release this weekend: Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment releases romantic horror comedy Warm Bodies about a young girl who falls in love with a zombie and Warner Bros. continues the march of the ancient action hero with Bullet to the Head starring Sylvester Stallone. Based on a popular novel of the same name, Warm Bodies comes with a built in fanbase and should appeal to much the same audience that the Twilight films did. Warm Bodies won’t take off like a rocket at the box office, but if word of mouth is good, it could be a potential sleeper hit. Stallone has had quite a comeback over the last few years, but Bullet to the Head will likely follow the way of Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand. Based on my estimates the Top 10 will generate about $62.6 million over the weekend, down a huge 40.9% from last year when Chronicle from 20th Century Fox and CBS Film’s The Woman in Black led the overall Top 10 to a total of $88.2 million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JANUARY 25-27 2013
There are three new films opening in wide release this weekend: After being pushed back a year, Paramount finally releases action-centric fable Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, Relativity Media releases Movie 43, a series of loosely interconnected short comedies starring half of the actor and actresses in Hollywood and Jason Statham is back in ass kicking mode in Parker from FilmDistrict. Renner has become a big star after co-starring in The Avengers and taking the reins from Matt Damon in The Bourne Legacy, but it won’t be enough; the film will likely play out as poorly at the box office as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Movie 43 will lose the only audience that may be interested in it (teenagers) due to its R-rating and Statham will likely stay on par with the opening of his other films despite the presence of co-star Jennifer Lopez. Based on my estimates the Top 10 will generate about $82.7 million over the weekend, down about 10.5% from last year when The Grey from Open Road Films and Sony’s Underworld: Awakening led the overall Top 10 to a total of $91.4 million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JANUARY 11-13 2013
There are three new films opening in wide release this weekend: After being pushed back from last September, Warner Bros. finally releases 1930’s crime drama Gangster Squad starring Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone. Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow follows up The Hurt Locker with Sony’s Zero Dark Thirty, based on the true story behind the decade long search for Osama Bin Laden and Open Road Films releases horror spoof A Haunted House starring Marlon Wayans who also serves as co-writer. Gangster Squad should do well due to its cast especially since it has been a long time since Penn appeared in a mainstream tough guy kind of role. Zero Dark Thirty will likely gross more in its opening weekend than The Hurt Locker did in its entire run due to tremendous award season buzz, but do audiences really want to watch a film about the hunt for Bin Laden? Most war themed films centered on any aspect of the War on Terror have failed at the box office up until now. A Haunted House could over-perform due to the lack of comedies in the marketplace but after four Scary Movies and a fifth on the way, audiences may have become tired of the horror spoof genre. Based on my estimates the Top 10 will generate about $111.5 million over the weekend, up about 5.5% from last year when Universal’s Contraband and Beauty and the Beast 3D from Disney led the overall Top 10 to a total of $105.7 million.

BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WEEKEND OF JANUARY 4-6 2013
There are two new films opening in wide release this weekend: Leatherface haunts theatres once again in Lionsgate’s remake/reboot Texas Chainsaw 3D and Matt Damon and John Krasinski star in environmental drama Promised Land from Focus Features. Texas Chainsaw 3D should fare okay (at least for the first weekend) while Promised Land will likely have a difficult time grabbing hold at the box office primarily due to a low theatre count of about 700 theatres. FilmGo.net is estimating that the Top 10 will generate about $110.6 million over the weekend, down about 9% from last year when The Devil Inside and Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol, both from Paramount led the overall Top 10 to a total of $120.5 million.
